On this same subject:

The website Built St. Louis is a really amazing resource about issues of preservation/neglect in STL. They have a lot of detailed photoessays specifically on North St. Louis and the intentional patterns of neglect that have claimed so many of the buildings there, and left the urban landscape all but desolate.

Thanks, Luke, watching that now.

This is somehow both infuriating and unsurprising, both amoral and just the kind of ruthless, casually racist policymaking that decimated neighborhoods and let down so many people.

Essentially, the City commissioned studies that correctly determined that a large swath of the city was impoverished with poor building stock and infrastructure. And it decided the best response was to withdraw services (libraries, code enforcement, presumably police and fire) and just let those areas rot until they can someday be completely razed and redeveloped. That's an impressive level of cruelty.

Not sure if gentrification is right term here. Partially is. It is subsidized capitalism. Or vulturization.

A lot of properties being sold to McKee-like investors for a couple thousand dollars. Often these people have no connection to StL and interest in these neighborhoods other than being invested cheaply on the next govt subsidized thing.

Not sure what the alternative is. disappointing Dorsey Square group chose to graft with the blight route. But Dorsey Twitter allows itself to be the Trump Hunger Games hologram, so unsurprising
