So this is a rave and a rant.

Rave: Amazing idea and video.

Rant: Why didn't I think of this with my dad? Given his love of music, I imagine we may have had a similar reaction.

Feel free to use this thread for your "d'oh" moments.

This has been cruising through facebook. I was kind of disappointed at the first two minutes or so after skipping the video a few times until I realized it was getting a lot more attention than one or two random cousins/acquaintances passing along a video. But once that dude starts rocking out, it really kicked my ass. My gram'pa passed away in a lot of pain and confusion in his last week or two, and I wonder if his old radio would have helped him in his last days. I only talked about it to my brother (til GRB anonymity), but that random video really got to me.

It hit me hard enough that I spent a good full night awake thinking about my own father and what I would do if he became a victim to elderly-aged dimentia. What music I would play for my own father to calm him. But, once I spent time thinking about all this great music, it actually put me into a great mood. That's what great music is here for, right?

/plays more Chieftains.

Not that young children aren't animated, but seeing how infants and toddlers react to music is equally amazing. It's universal.

We did this for my mom last year in her last week of life. She didn't have dementia, but cancer. In her last week she was essentially comatose. My brother and sister were at her bedside. I had my iPod with me and, for whatever reason, I suggested we play some of her favorite music. I have a beautiful rendition of Ave Maria by The Canadian Brass, started it and then briefly left the room. I didn't get to see it unfortunately, but apparently my mom had such a reaction to the music, my brother and sister were in tears when I returned. I wish I had stayed to see it, but that song has an emotional pull for me now, as well. I'm tearing up now, typing about it. Music truly is universal.

I'd do this for my mom when she gets to that point but I fear that elevator music just won't quicken her.
