Ahhhh, comfort food! Nothing takes the bite out of a cold day like a hot bowl of tomato soup.

Tomato soup with a little sauteed onion and a handful of macaroni
is what got me through college.

And I still love it.

I had to cut down on that stuff--I'm susceptible to high blood pressure, and too much sodium (particularly canned soups at the time) was sending my blood pressure sky high. There are far better choices on grocery shelves today than there were in 1986.

Not long after I had moved to Budapest and was still learning the basics of the language, my girl and I took a mid-winter trip to a tiny town in a mountain area called Buuk.

Of course we barely made it out of bed, and all the nookie left us hungry. We went to the local restaurant and tried to order. My GF was vegetarian, and there was thing called paradicsom leves on the menu that was vaguely familiar. I knew it was soup, but I was unsure what kind. I asked our waitress in Hungarian, and she gave me this [expletive] look and made a half-hearted gesture with her hands of something small and round.

Turned out I had asked her "what is a tomato?"

I'll never forget that.

I ordered some tomato bisque soup last night as an appetizer at a restaurant down the street from my apartment. That, combined with my entree of a basil pesto and goat cheese pizza, made for a fantastic meal.

Tomato soup is gross. I prefer gravy.
