In my experience, scotch is a more divisive than bourbon so if you're getting a gift for someone you don't know it's a safer bet.

Oban is a great example because it’s fruity and spicy and strikes a great balance on both the delicate/smoky scale and the light/rich scale. You can alternatively do a Cadenhead bottling of Bruichladdich or an Old Pulteney in that general ballpark if you want to get a little more obscure/geeky with it.

Re: Rant/Rave: Bourbon
I ended up getting Stag Jr. Given the office has a whiskey room (my guess is the offerings are fairly standard) I wanted to get something a little harder to find than Noah's and a with bolder flavor profile. My hope is this bottle will fill a niche in their offerings.
In Fine Spirits was a good choice. The staff is great.
I appreciate everyone's help.

Re: Rant/Rave: Bourbon
Yeah, Stagg because of the proof is really hot, and that burn can mute some of the other notes. I find it (and almost any brown liquor over 60%) best with a dropper bottle of filtered water. Add a few drops to a dash and it mutes the heat a bit and the oak, raisin notes and chocolate/caramel flavors start to come out.
If someone likes ice that will do the same thing but I don't like my whiskey cold like that.

Like bookers, I would cut Stagg Jr with water.

Change of plans. I just found out he loves to sip tequila. I know he enjoys Don Julio 1942 Anejo Tequila so I might get that, but I'm open to suggestions. Price range 100-200.
edit - he's a pretty wealthy guy so I'm sure has quite a few bottles of the 1942, so I'd really like to get him something else
