Hochman: On what would have been opening day, Busch Stadium sits silent

Each seat was wet and empty, nary a tush.

The buntings were hung by the sections with care

In hopes that St. Louisans soon would be there.
Also this gem:

So... I'm playing in a virtual trivia night tonight, and I'm on Hochman's team.

I hope you told him to jump out of his car.

I don't know how he could have survived it.

A virtual trivia night? How does that even work? Do you have to, like, trust people not to cheat? I’m way too cynical for that.

I used to play regularly (i.e. at least once a week) with a highly competitive team. Cell phones certainly weren’t an issue when we started in the early 90’s, but gradually became more and more problematic. One night, I noticed a strange looking electronic contraption in the middle of the table. I asked what it was, and one of them told me it was a cellular signal blocker. They said to keep it on the DL because it wasn’t exactly legal. These guys didn’t [expletive] around.

This one was on the honor system. I feel confident my team didn’t cheat. I’m hoping others didn’t. One of my teammates said he played in a virtual trivia night where the MC just kept everyone’s screens up the entire time to monitor for cheating.

I also misunderstood the event a little but still had fun. Hochman just blasted an invite to everyone he’s mutuals with on Twitter, which includes a friend of mine who assembled our team. Hochman did do some introductory and wrap up stuff, but that was about the extent of his involvement on the night.

My team got 52/60, and I’m not especially disappointed with any of the questions we got wrong. Still, that was only good for like 6th place out of 22 tables. The winning team got 57/60. Maybe they were cheating but I also know they had a guy who was an absolute vacuum for Cardinals/baseball knowledge.
