This has been a brutal tour so far, with lots of crashes injuring and/or knocking out some GC contenders, including Bradley Wiggins, Alexander Vinokourov (broken femur and wrist), Chris Horner, Janez Brajkovic, as well as Tom Boonen.

This crash in stage 9 is unbelievable. The rider is Juan Antonio Flecha. Johnny Hoogerland gets clipped by Flecha and ends up flying into the freaking fence at about 30mph.

[expletive] French drivers.

In an absolutely jaw-dropping accident, featuring unfathomable levels of stupidity, the driver of a French television car has crashed into the leaders. In an attempt to avoid a tree that stuck out a foot into the road, a television car swerved sharply into the center of the road. The leaders of the race were right next to the car, and Juan Antonio Flecha was hit at a high speed. He went crashing into Johnny Hoogerland, who went flying into a fence.

Thankfully, neither Hoogerland or Flecha is seriously injured as both are up and racing, but Hoogerland is receiving treatment from the mobile doctor and appears to be in a good deal of pain. He should re-join the peloton shortly. Flecha has a chance to catch up to the leading three riders, but it appears that they have pulled away from him. One thing is certain, though: The driver of that car won't be around to crash into anyone tomorrow. There's no way he'll be performing the same task on Stage 10.

Also, in addition to Alexander Vinokourov and Jurgen van den Broeck, David Zabriskie has been forced to withdraw from the race due to injuries sustained on a crash.

Oh--so this isn't about bikers going cold turkey on performance-enhancing drugs?

Holy hell... how does this even happen? I think race organizers planned it to get more viewers. Afterall, the possibility of crashes occuring is the only reason people watch NASCAR.

I don't know what the French network paid for the rights to broadcast from the peloton, but I am sure it was considerable, given how big cycling is in France. And generally, cycling crashes are pretty dull--usually big pileups in the pelton. Rarely do bodies go flying like Hoogerland did. Crashes on the mountain descents can be horrific due to high speeds, and it's not uncommon for riders to die if they crash on a descent.

I've never seen anything like this, it's not uncommon at all for team cars to actually be driving along side making adjustments to a guys bike while they are doing 30mph. So the riders don't mind the cars because they assume they know what they are doing, but this guy had no business being where he was. That road was too narrow and with trees on the side (he swerved it looked like to avoid a tree possibly) that was crazy.

They will bomb the mountains at 60mph .. I rode with a guy years ago that race in Europe and the stories he told were just terrifying. He talked about feeling his wheel skipping out from underneath him on every turn as he was litterally at the limit of what he could do. Crazy stuff. Once in my life I hit 51 on a straight hill and it was pretty alamring to say the least, I can not imagine leaning my bike into a turn at that speed.

Yeah, the driver swerved to avoid a large tree that had basically grown into the world. He also had 3 motorcycles close behind him, so had he jammed his breaks, it probably would have been much worse.

Thank God no one was seriously injured. I am watching the replay this am (today is a rest day) and I saw the driver, who looked like he was crying. I would be too.

Holy Cow. Watching the replay of yesterday's crazy stage and I see another melee where a bunch of riders flew off into the trees on a damp descent.

Oh boy, this is the one that broke Vinokourov's pelvis. Sheesh. He must have hit a tree. They had to carry him out of the woods and up the steep bank. The whole Astana team is with him. This is awful to watch.

Hoogerland in the barbed wire fence after his accident. He needed 33 stitches.
