Whose also a lame duck and probably on his way out the door after this season anyway. If he did have interest and St. Louis did offer something I don't think it's comical at all to think the Rays would have that conversation.JL21 wrote:Maybe Maddon has interest, maybe he doesn't, but I think it's comical to assume that the Cardinals could just throw some money the Rays way and everyone would say "Sure, you can have our manager, who's the consensus best manager in the game. After all, you are the St. Louis Cardinals(!!!) and we all know that you deserve everything you can get."

I agree with you if you mean the 8th inning of his first spring training game. The ripping will begin before opening day.wart57 wrote:I give the new manager until the 8th inning of his first game before he gets ripped on these here interwebs.

This. It's Maddon's walk year, and it's comical to think the Rays will offer him a contract in 2013 that will even match what other teams will offer. Why not try to get something for him this year.vinsanity wrote:Whose also a lame duck and probably on his way out the door after this season anyway. I agree. There are those that would want nothing more than to be that guy that finally gets it done in Chicago. Plus, no offense, but it's a way better place to live.lukethedrifter wrote:I don't know how you can be so sure about that. You might be right but your certitude puzzles me.Fat Strat wrote:The Cubs are not more attractive than the Cards right now. No way. And it's not even close. But there will be good candidates, no doubt. There just are only 30 manager jobs in MLB, and maybe less than 6 or 8 that would be as attractive as the Cardinals. To name one, the Cubs would be more attractive right now, IMO - higher payroll, lower expectations for next year, if you do win it there you are an all-time hero, etc.
MLB managers don't want lower expectations. They want talent and a front office that will do what it takes to win. The Cubs are probably 2-3 seasons away from being in contention. The Cards, almost regardless of what happens with Albert, will probably be the odds on favorite to come out of the NL again. Howard is out for Philly. Milwaukee is losing Prince. We get Wainwright back.
Not to mention the fact that the Cards have the second most championships in MLB history and have spend the last 15 years winning, winning, winning, and winning some more. There's not a single team in the NL that has won more games and playoff games than the Cardinals over the past 15-40 years.

What about the thought that Tony made his decision based on Albert?lukethedrifter wrote:I don't disagree with Bernie

Pujols isn't going to make his decision based on TLR. He's going to sign a long-term deal. LaRussa wouldn't have been around for it.

There isn't anything that could convince me to live in Chicago (except lots of money).

The Rays are opening a new ballpark and Maddon, more than anyone, is the face of that franchise. If there's even remotely a chance that the organization can pay him, they will. And it's not like we're talking about Pujols or something. We aren't talking about $20-25M per year contracts.
That'd be one hell of a way to thank taxpayers for giving you a new stadium- auctioning off your manager, who's the best in the game.

Can't believe that some here seemed to be relieved that Mo said we're going to look for the best manager available.
