Well hopefully that was just one of two clues that went out yesterday, the other one being Pujols' "I don't see why not."docellis wrote:2. Who replaces Tony La Russa?
La Russa's retirement as Cardinals manager on Monday morning was the shocker of the day. The only clue anyone had, and you had to listen carefully, came when he was asked in the celebration whether he was retiring and answered, "I don't want to spoil the moment.''

Pujols isn't going to make his decision based on TLR. He's going to sign a long-term deal. LaRussa wouldn't have been around for it.

I've been incommunicado with the world since last night until right now. I have the strangest feeling. I wouldn't have ever thought he'd quit so close to McGraw.
Bye bye Tony. It's been wacky fun.

Every team I root hardcore for has gone under a coaching change within the past 2 years...
Vols football
Vols basketball
Titans
And now the cards.
I guess you could count the pistons too but I could care less about the NBA.

Has Ted Simmons been mentioned here? I believe, off the top of my head, he's been with the Padres as a bench coah lately under Black, or am I remembering that wrong? I'm not saying he's the best candidate, but I would think he'd be applying.

That would be correct. He's now in the Mariners FO.st.lewis11 wrote:Has Ted Simmons been mentioned here? I don't think he'd want to be a first time manager at the age of 62, though.

Re: Update p 2: Tony LaRussa Retires
I had wondered if he'd take this opportunity to step away.
Can't say I'm shocked or surprised.
And, I think it's possible he might manage again elsewhere.
What a great run though. Thanks Tony! You might argue about his methods, but I don't think you can argue about the results.*
*OK, you can. But, I'd rather not right now if you don't mind.
