The Cardinals have acquired Cedric Hunter from the Athletics for future considerations, reports Brian Walton of TheCardinalNation.com. Joe Strauss of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch confirmed the move (on Twitter). Hunter has been assigned to Triple-A.

Hunter, 24, was with Oakland after being claimed off waivers from the Padres in October. He had one hit and one walk in five plate appearances for San Diego last season, also putting up a .255/.322/.358 in 316 Triple-A plate appearances. Baseball America ranked him as the Padres top prospect back in 2007.

was a solid prospect not very long ago

I'm guessing for depth, might still have some upside

I think they are preparing to deal Shane Robinson for Tim Lincecum.

Either that or they're planning to have Shane Robinson on the club all season.

He was assigned to AA when the A's broke camp because he was on our original roster, then when the team got in town Cedric didn't come with them. There were a few questions on why he wasn't here, those questions have been answered.

I know you're prolly joking but in case you're not, there's no way that trade goes down.

Lincecum is an injury waiting to happen!!!!

If he's a -.1 war player, does he have to pay $500,000 to be on the team?

Here's the link to Hunter's minor-league stats:

http://www.baseball-reference....id=hunter001ced

He seems to have some speed, based on his triples numbers, but doesn't steal a lot of bases. Not much power and doesn't walk a whole lot (48 is his career high). What he does, give Memphis an extra outfielder (they appear to be a little short right now with Hamilton and Luna on the DL) but he doesn't strike me as anything special, despite his "top prospect" rating with the Padres (that may speak more about the Padres, though). I imagine he's probably better defensively than Cazana, who I suppose can DH now.

Interesting trivia: he made his major-league debut on Opening Day last season against the Cards and scored what proved to be the winning run in the 11th inning when he pinch-ran for Cameron Maybin. The next day he pinch-hit and walked. He got a pinch-hit single two days later against the Giants, then went 0-for-3 over the next few games and was sent down to Tucson.
