I've been to wine tastings where they taught me all that stuff about swirling and swishing and sniffing and what not. I get it, but you don't need that big of a glass is all I'm saying.

Personally I don't even need a glass. I'll just chug it straight from the bottle or box.

Ha! A good friend of mine manages the Binny's in Lincoln Park, which took over Sam's after some private equity guys ran the business into the ground. He's a wine guru, and every time we got out for dinner together, he either brings or selects amazing wines. He also donates wine for our park fund raisers. He's a great to friend have.

A good wine that breathes a bit is completely different from one that hasn't. It is really important to decant those suckers or at least aerate them in the glass. Otherwise you miss the best that the wine has to offer.

How right you are. A good fortified wine, properly aerated, allows the grain alcohol and wine bouquet to blossom like a mushroom cloud, and if well-swirled (with a swizzle stick or straw), the sediment will add just the right gritty texture to each mouthful. With flavored wines, the swirling allows the artificial coloring to adhere to and ooze down the inside of the plastic cup for a delightful visual display.

No wonder the place sucked -they cater to the coupon crowd. They'll probably el-foldo within a few.

Been trying to hit brewpubs when we travel and have thought about going there when at my bros in west suburbs. Though it sounded like it was in an industrial park so we skipped. Is that Two Brothers?

Not counting the bar and grills and wing joints where it is about drinking a few beers -and Oh they have food too - I like going out to eat somewhere nice occassionally with the wife or just one other couple. Big groups -you usually have to go somewhere you don't like because some [expletive] has a coupon, or some other [expletive] hangup.

We like to cook too (you can like both), and sometimes do it up big. Mrs. Freed loves cooking for when we have a group at our house -and sometimes I look at the grocery tab (something like $350 for a dozen people this Christmas - and that isn't counting what the other people brought) and find it would have been cheaper to have it catered or gone out. Though that steamed mussels dish was kick ass.

That's probably it, although I'm not sure exactly where it is. I know it's like 10 minutes from where I work and I've been there. I think they get weird with their beer. Here is a description of their weiss beer:

Quote:
Ebel's Weiss beer is a very traditional German Hefeweizen
that is naturally unfiltered. It has wonderful malt sweetness
and a soft aroma of clove, vanilla, and banana. This deep
golden colored weiss will make you think you are in Bavaria.

Besides making you think you are in Bavaria, it will also cause you to question your own manhood. I can definitely say I smelled/tasted vanilla and banana, and some other god damned thing that must be that clove they are talking about - whatever that is.

Yes, Two Brothers is in an odd location in an industrial park. I thought it might be the wrong address when I first looked it up, but lo and behold it was there.

That description is pretty much par for the course for traditional Bavarian weiss beers. Trouble is, I've yet to drink one in America that had the right flavors, because they don't have the right yeast strains.
