Hazed in the workplace for political beliefs

Post by planet planet »

Does this happen to anyone else at work where the majority of their co-workers are of the opposite political beliefs? I was "outed" yesterday by a co-worker who knew I was liberal. Since then I have heard an endless stream of lame jokes, not-so-funny name calling, and sharing my newly discovered status with everyone in the company. I tried to deflect by putting a picture of the Chinese flag and Vote Communism Soviet poster on my cube wall today to no avail. It's really getting on my nerves.

Hopefully Planet, the new will wear off and they will find something else to act childish about.

Ask them if they'd be willing to sign an affidavit containing their statements that your lawyer just drafted. That should shut 'em up.

This is the problem with political labels. I'm guessing none of them tried to engage you in a discussion, they just stereotyped you into what they think a liberal is.

My brother works construction in Stl and is in the union. He had a republican sticker on his car last election and was literally surrounded and physically threatened by some of the thugs.

Not quite. You would have to receive hate PMs to achieve that.

My coworkers are largely conservatives, but our company makes the bulk of our money doing publicly funded projects, so I like to haze people about how hypocritical and dumb it is to vote republican in every election and then harass everyone who works here to vote for local ordinances that increase government spending on construction projects.

I work with mostly conservatives. Have family on both sides, and my 2 roommates are both liberal, while a majority of my friends are conservative (engineers tend to lean right). The key is really to find common ground and talk that up. Lighten the mood by joking about the extreme end of your direction. Just don't give the vibe that you're a poster child for either political party.

I work in Finance. I am (mostly) liberal. I understand how you feel.

A trip to HR would probably silence a lot of that noise.
