Bulls fans - help me with my ticket draft.

Post by jim »

I'm sharing a Bulls season ticket 3 ways this year - so 15 games (41 RS and 4 pre-season split 3 ways). There will be a snake draft (1-2-3-3-2-1) in August to distribute tickets. Being the computer geek that I am, I wrote a python program that generates a list based on weighting factors. There is a weight applied to a team, and then weights applied to specific days. The dates are unique to me - I added weight to weekday games over my son's college winter/spring break, completely dinged the xmas day game because I can't go etc... But the team weights I'm wondering if I might get some input - maybe there is a team that I have weighted too low that would be more interesting than I imagine. Here is the team weight scores I used:

MIA,100
OKC,90
LAL,85
SAS,80
DAL,70
LAC,62
IND,60
BOS,57
MEM,55
ORL,52
DEN,50
NYK,45
PHI,40
ATL,33
POR,32
UTA,31
HOU,30
PHO,23
GSW,21
MIN,22
MIL,20
BKN,13
CLE,10
NOH,12
SAC,11
TOR,6
WAS,5
DET,0
CHA,1

Basically what I did was used the Vegas odds as a guide, and started with Miami at 100 and worked my way down. How does that list look?

The entire list with weights applied for the day the game is on looks like this:

Code: Select all

Thu Feb 21 MIA 07:00 100

Tue Oct 09 MEM 07:00 -45
Tue Dec 25 HOU 07:00 -70
Fri Oct 19 MIN 07:00 -78
Tue Oct 16 MIL 07:00 -80
So that is my first pass of my draft cheat sheet. The number on the right is the overall score I gave the game which is a function on who they are playing and when they are playing. For example the Lakers jumped ahead of the Thunder because it's a holiday (MLK) when they play the Lakers. It's a live draft, so I'll have the ability to diverge as I go(I'm not going to pick the same team twice if I can, and I'll try to sprinkle the dates around the calender instead of bunching them). Any comments from the basketball gurus on here would be appreciated.

Not a bulls fan, but I would have weighted Saturday/sunday games just because I'd rather go to a game on the weekend and presumably easier travel arrangements than rush hour or so during the week. But, seems like a pretty good method overall. I'm sure the people picking as well will appreciate that you aren't going to be sifting through every game left on the schedule to make a pick.

These are my subjective rankings based on my viewing preferences, without any objective data or Las Vegas odds.
By default, all post-January games become twice as valuable to me, because of the return of D Rose. I'll add comments to teams that I move up or down significantly.

MIA,100
OKC,90
LAC,62 - Griffin and Paul are two of the most entertaining, in-person watches in the game.
MIN,22 - Rubio. Love. Two of the players in the league I've never seen live but really want to.
LAL,85
IND,60 - There Will Be Blood.
SAS,80
DAL,70
BOS,57
MEM,55
NYK,45
PHI,40
NOH,12 - Davis, Gordon and Rivers will be fun to watch. Davis is a truly jaw dropping athlete that I'd love to see in person.
BKN,13 - I'd rather watch Deron Williams than any player on any team below this.
CLE,10 - I'd rather watch Kyrie Irving than any player on any team below this.
SAC,11 - I'd rather watch Boogie Cousins than any player on any team below this.
GSW,21 - I'd rather watch Steph Curry than any player on any team below this.
DEN,50 - Bland city. Applies to next 4 teams.
ATL,33
POR,32
UTA,31
HOU,30
ORL,52 - Dwight Howard probably won't be there. If he is, who cares. That team is a tough watch other than him and he won't be interested.
PHO,23
MIL,20
TOR,6
WAS,5
DET,0
CHA,1

I might bump up the Saturday factor and run again. But mostly I wanted folks to look at that team weight and see what they thought. My son thinks I have the Nets too low and the Hornets too low as well. He also thinks Boston is too low but that's mostly because he just wants to see Boston, and I can't blame him. It's not stictly the best teams, it's the marquis teams and I might bump Boston up just because they are the Celtics.

Awesome thrill - exactly the feedback I'm looking for.

edit ... and a basic change to my program. I'm going to add a little factor for games past Jan. .. the Rose factor.

My draft has started, this is kind of fun. I had pick #2 (splitting 3 ways), so 2, 5, 8, etc... Laker game went first. My first two choices are:

Mar 27 vs Heat
Feb 11 vs Spurs

Home game vs Heat, not in winter weather and D Rose will probably be back? Slam dunk.

That's awesome, Jim. NBA games live are the best.

I agree thrill, we might not see eye to eye on soccer but we do on basketball <wink>. Thanks for the help, I used your advice. I got the Minnesota game and the late March Indiana game really on your advice.
