I never used to despise the Clash, but now I do...

Seriously, GRB has influenced my taste in music, movies, books, TV shows (I'm currently catching up on Breaking Bad), beer, food, yada yada yada.

And our weekend in Paris a few years back was greatly enhanced by Jim's recommendation on where to stay.

And I've enjoyed hanging out with a few of you. And since I survived without any damage Mrs. Rad doesn't give me crap anymore for being on here. She was even okay with letting mini-Rad go to lunch with me and Tambourine Man.

In Alaska, trying to get my work done for the day so I can go stand in the Kenai River tonight, slaying some salmon.

I'm borrowing poles, so I'm stuck with spinner reels basically doing fly fishing. It's fishing for reds (sockeyes) which don't feed once they enter the river anyway.

It's a blast though. Sockeyes put up a hell of a fight, so they're really fun to try to land.

Do you use those egg flies? I've never fished for them but found it fascinating. Some say it's just pure random luck hooking one, others say you need to mimic an egg ... I don't know. I've caught land locked Sockeye's (kokanee), but they are only related by DNA and act nothing like(or even look like) what you are dealing with.

For sockeyes, since they stop feeding once they enter the river, most people just use brightly colored yarn. Some use just a bare hook. It is pretty much random luck, though there is some strategy (figuring out how far out, and in which channels they're running) and some technique (presenting the hook at the right depth, setting the hook, landing them, etc.)--neither of which I have mastered, or even come close. Though I've caught several now. And grilled one up--best salmon I've ever had.

Fishing for silvers is different--then you use an egg fly, because they still feed. Hopefully will be going after them next week on a pretty remote river near our job site.

You really should. I've never been much of a fishing fan, but I'm drawn to the river every night up here now, even if it keeps me up past midnight.
