Re: Cutting the Cable/Satellite Cord
I dropped NFL Sunday Ticket this year because the prices have become outrageous ($270, or well over $20 per Carolina Panthers game that I actually need the service to see), and NFLST was really the only reason I had DirecTV. I really like what I'm hearing about PlayStation Vue, but its and every similar service's inability to stream the over-the-air networks (which we can't get because we're too far away to pick them up via antenna) is the major thing keeping us 'corded' right now.

Agreed and did not know that watchespn used mlbamndistops wrote:MLBAM already is responsible for the WatchESPN streaming.AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:Disney (owner of espn) took a 33% ownership stake in mlb advanced media or whatever their streaming software is. Seems odd as watch espn is a great streamin app. Probably the best out there as far as quality and reliability go. Maybe they want access to the fx technology?
I found that move interesting from MLB's perspective, especially considering they gave Disney an option to buy another one-third stake in four years and thereby become majority owners.

Re: Cutting the Cable/Satellite Cord
I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around why I'm unable to watch Cardinals games on FS Midwest since its a part of the sports tier package i am subscribing to.
Seems to me, if im paying extra for a sports package, there would be a deal in place for FS and MLB to get a cut of that subscription, which is why it costs extra.
Isn't the point of those sports packages for those that are out of market to have access to those channels/games?
These are the channels that are included in that package:
The only baseball games i get on a consistent basis are the padres games. If it's blackout rules, why are the padres the only team i can watch? makes no sense to me.

I don't know where you live, but if you're not in MLB.TV's blackout zone for a particular team, you can't watch games for them even if you subscribe to their RSN (this applies to NBA/NHL too). There are some places (Iowa is a commonly used example) that are blacked out of enough teams that subscribing to that sports package would make sense due to the added amount of games you could watch.
I don't know why you can't just subscribe to an RSN, games included - I'm sure there's something about revenue sharing that would make that tricky to implement - but even if you could it would cost far more than MLB.TV does now.

We got a roku box years ago, and have had amazon prime for shipping for awhile. Pay for netflix and prime and that's all we need. Including Prime (which we usually don't even use for TV), we pay like $20/month for subscriptions. Probably less. (Prime is once a year, so I don't remember off the top of my head. Less than $10/month for sure) Our internet is $30 or $40/month, which we would have anyways.
Any decent TV that I miss I'll get to in a couple years when it ends up on netflix. There is so much stuff already on there, who cares about what is newest now. Oh noes! I won't get a handful of stupid pop culture references at work! (which is fine, considering I convinced a coworker that the blackbean noodles I was eating were a type of worms called gagh. She missed that pop culture reference from a decade or two ago) Oh noes, I missed the reality tv boom! Yeah, I'll survive. For cardinals and blues... kmox. What else do I need?

Iowa and Las Vegas are the two biggest blacked out areas. Both are blacked out of six teams. It's ridiculous.ndistops wrote:I don't know where you live, but if you're not in MLB.TV's blackout zone for a particular team, you can't watch games for them even if you subscribe to their RSN (this applies to NBA/NHL too). Although surprisingly, when I lived north of Des Moines for a few years after college, I was not blacked out from Cardinals games. I just watched them on Fox Sports Midwest like most others. I was blacked out from Royals games though. If you drove 30 minutes east to Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, they were blacked out from Cardinals games. It was so odd.

I think we've discussed it a little on here. When it first rolled out (when I used it) it was terrible for the big events like march madness and the buffering made it pretty much useless.TimeForGuinness wrote:About ready to cut the cord...anyone use Sling TV?
