White Sox will surprise some people. They are trending up and can easily take that awful division sooner rather than later.

White Sox cleared room for Machado by releasing Charlie Tilson today.

According to Jon Heyman of Fancred, the White Sox "continue to try hard" in their pursuit of free agent superstar Manny Machado.
It sure sounds like the White Sox are not willing to meet Machado's current asking price of $300-325 million, but perhaps nobody will. The Phillies and Yankees are the only other two teams believed to be involved at this point, and there has been no word of anything close to a $300 million-plus offer. Heyman notes that the White Sox "appear to have at least given themselves a real chance."

There isn't so much pressure for them to go that high when the Yankees seem only willing to sign him at a bargain rate and no one else is in the mix at all. The market for Machado should be significantly hotter, but the entire league is more fixated on profits than winning.

Remember when the excuse for teams not spending last offseason was because they were saving up for Machado/Harper?
I've already read a few articles that are all "well, maybe the teams are saving for the next free agent class in 2019". Honestly, some MLB journalists sound like battered wives trying to make excuses for their garbage husbands.

Yu Darvish got $126M last offseason. Eric Hosmer got $144M. Jake Arrieta got $75M.

I don't remember teams no spending last off-season. Who didn't get paid?

Average MLB payroll dropped for the first time since 2004.

So despite your two perfectly reasonable deals, and one which looks a bit excessive, overall, teams paid players less. And this season, half the top ten available free agents (including the two most anticipated free agents of the last decade) remain unsigned.

Harper and Machado are getting paid. Don't kid yourself.
