https://www.mlb.com/cardinals/news/carl ... -303835972Cardinals pitching coach Mike Maddux suggested Tuesday that Carlos Martinez could again be used in relief this year.
Martinez finished last season as the primary closer in St. Louis and pitched very well in that role. The hope is that he'll prove durable enough for a full-season rotation spot in 2019 -- he battled multiple upper-arm injuries in 2018 -- but Maddux is leaving open the door to more relief appearances for the 27-year-old right-hander. "It was pretty cool to watch him pitch out of the bullpen, wasn't it?" Maddux said. "I liked him out of the bullpen a lot."

What happens to the image/expectation rehabilitation campaign for Dexter Fowler if he struggles and Tyler O'Neill comes out mashing in Spring Training?

Alex Reyes (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday in Cardinals camp.
Reyes doesn't seem too far behind the other pitchers that have reported to Jupiter, Florida and could crack the Cardinals' active Opening Day roster with a strong showing in the Grapefruit League. What role he will fill this year in St. Louis is not entirely clear at this point. It could range from prominent starting pitcher to late-inning reliever, possibly even the primary closer. We'll have a watchful eye on the 24-year-old right-hander throughout the next six weeks.

Fowler as an expensive backup isn't the end of the world. Dude still has great plate discipline and is a switch hitter. OF versatility means we can carry another reliever over a lefty bench option if needed.letsgocards89 wrote:What happens to the image/expectation rehabilitation campaign for Dexter Fowler if he struggles and Tyler O'Neill comes out mashing in Spring Training?
