Tyler O'Neill has made the Cardinals' Opening Day roster.

O'Neill won't have a starting job at the beginning of the season but figures to be a pretty active fourth outfielder. He's slugged five home runs this spring and boasts enormous power potential should he eventually find his way into the lineup regularly.

Cardinals purchased the contract of C Matt Wieters from Triple-A Memphis.

Wieters was always expected to win the backup catcher job and that possibility only increased with Francisco Pena battling an oblique issue. The four-time All-Star doesn't project to play much behind Yadier Molina.

Cardinals designated LHP Chasen Shreve for assignment.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Matt Wieters. Shreve has always been a bat-misser but also has had major control problems and that was on display this spring with nine walks in nine innings.

Breaking camp with one legit lefty reliever? Cool.

Maybe the Cards have learned a lesson about sticking with bad relievers for too long because of contracts or options or whatever. We’ll see how it plays out with Mayers, Cecil and Gregerson.

don't really care about a lefty reliever, when we have miller (who is a LHP), reyes, and hicks at the back end of the bullpen when those matchups would matter.

and with the 3 hitter minimum coming next year these guys need to learn to pitch to everyone, since a lefty specialist is fazed out starting next year.

What's that have to do with this year?

Carrying a lefty that can't get outs isn't good in any year.

pretty sure that's addressed with my first sentence

My point is that the 3 batter minimum rule isn't a thing this year, so why is potential future rules affecting how we manage this year? Shildt should have more options than Miller in the pen. Even Layne would be better as he has a good split history vs. lefties.

You can have both though so, no it isn't really addressed. Why not take advantage of having a LOOGY? Situational pitching is bigger now than ever.
