Memphis

Redbirds Just Shy in Wild, 11-Inning Affair
The Memphis Redbirds and Iowa Cubs (Cubs) locked in a wild game Thursday night at AutoZone Park, with the Cubs prevailing in 11 innings, 9-8.

The Redbirds (18-16) came back from a 4-0 deficit to tie the game, matched the Cubs (23-11) in the 10th inning with a run, and then nearly erased a four-run 11th-inning hole before coming up shy.

Rangel Ravelo tied the game in the sixth with his second opposite-field home run in two games, a two-run shot. He also had a double and an RBI single in the contest.

Jake Woodford tossed 5.0 innings and gave up only three hits, but two of them were two-run home runs to account for Iowa's regulation scoring. Hunter Cervenka, Ryan Helsley, Ryan Meisinger, and Tommy Layne finished the final four innings before extras in scoreless fashion, giving up just two hits.

Iowa plated a run on a balk in the top of the 10th, before Memphis answered back on a Drew Robinson sacrifice fly that sent the game to another extra frame.

The Cubs then scored four times in the top of the 11th, but the Redbirds did not go down quietly.

Ravelo knocked in a run with one out in the bottom of the 11th, and Joe Hudson then launched a pinch-hit two-run homer, his fifth of the year, to make it 9-8. But the final two Redbirds went down to wrap up the game.

Kramer Robertson made his Triple-A debut with a pinch-hit walk in the fifth inning. Andrew Knizner was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored and has hits in 19-of-24 games this season.

Iowa has won nine of its last 10 games.
Springfield

Cardinals streak hits 4 in 7-4 win over Naturals

DECISIONS:
W: LHP Austin Warner (1-2)
L: RHP Jace Vines (1-4)
S: RHP Seth Elledge (2)

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED:
- The Cardinals took the lead for good during a three-run third inning capped by a two-run single by RF Johan Mieses after DH Justin Williams tied the game 1-1 with his first Hammons Field RBI.

- With Warner cruising, the Cardinals pushed their lead to 7-2 in the sixth thanks to 1B Chris Chinea's fifth homer of the year, an RBI triple by CF Dylan Carlson and a pair of Naturals errors that accounted for two more Cardinals runs.

NOTABLES:
- Warner tossed his best game of 2019, pitching 7.0+ innings with five strikeouts, six hits, three earned runs and zero walks.

- SS Jose Martinez went 2-for-4 with a double in his first game with Springfield in 2019.

Chiefs Fall 4-1 Thursday
The Peoria Chiefs dropped the opening game of a three-game series in South Bend 4-1 on Thursday night. The loss ends a two-game winning streak and drops the Chiefs to 15-16 on the season with two games left on the road trip.

The hosts jumped out to the lead in the second inning against Alvaro Seijas. Jonathan Sierra led off with a single and Tyler Durna was hit by a pitch. Andy Weber bunted for a single to load the bases and Sierra scored on a double play. Levi Jordan gave South Bend a 2-0 lead with a single to right before Seijas got out of the inning.

South Bend made it 3-0 with two singles and an error in the third inning before the Chiefs got on the board in the sixth. Ivan Herrera connected for a one-out double against starter Faustino Carrera. With two down, Jack Patterson came in out of the bullpen and Brady Whalen delivered a RBI single to cut the South Bend lead to 3-1. The hosts added another unearned run in the seventh for the 4-1 final score.

Memphis

Redbirds Rally, Come Up Short against Iowa
The Memphis Redbirds (18-17) fell behind 7-0 to the Iowa Cubs (Cubs) Friday night at AutoZone Park, and despite scoring the next four runs came up short in the series finale, 7-4.

The first-place Cubs (24-11) picked up their 10th win in their last 11 games.

Genesis Cabrera struck out nine in 6.0 innings in a start, but he was hampered by allowing three first-inning runs and four more in the third. But after that, the left-hander kept the Cubs scoreless for his final 3.0 innings of work and retired eight of the final nine men he faced.

Memphis got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, as Drew Robinson picked up an RBI single before Tyler O'Neill added a two-run base hit of his own to make the score 7-3.

Carlos Martinez followed Cabrera out of the bullpen with his second injury rehabilitation appearance in Memphis, and he got two strikeouts in a quick seventh inning. He tossed nine-of-11 pitches for strikes.

Memphis got its fourth run in the bottom of the eighth, with pinch-hitter Adolis Garcia walking, moving to third on a Ramon Urias single, and scoring when Lane Thomas reached on an error on a ground ball to the right side.

After Martinez' outing, Chris Ellis and Chris Beck worked the last two innings in scoreless fashion to help the Redbirds keep Iowa at bay and set up the potential comeback.

But Memphis went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to seal the ballgame.

Six different Redbirds had one of the team's six hits in the game.
Springfield

Cardinals bats fall flat in 4-1 loss to Naturals
The Springfield Cardinals (13-21) lost 4-1 on Friday night to the Northwest Arkansas Naturals (13-20) in front of 5,846 fans at Hammons Field.

DECISIONS:
W: RHP Arnaldo Hernandez (1-0)
L: RHP Harold Arauz (0-3)
S: RHP Franco Terrero (2)

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED:
- The two-run second-inning home run by Naturals 1B Travis Jones was all Northwest Arkansas would need in the game with Springfield being held off the board until plating a single runner in the bottom of the ninth.

- The Cardinals mounted a rally in the ninth after being shut down for the first eight innings, loading the bases with two outs when 1B Chris Chinea was hit on a 2-2 pitch. Next, PH Brian O'Keefe drove LF Justin Williams home on an infield single, but 3B Alberto Triunfel popped out to end the game.

NOTABLES:
- The Naturals win at Hammons Field is the first win by either Northwest Arkansas or Springfield at that opponent's home ballpark this season.

- C Jose Godoy led all Cardinals batters with a 2-for-4 night. Only three other Springfield batters managed a hit.

- Hernandez allowed just three hits and four walks over 7.0 innings for the Naturals, striking out six in his first Double-A start of 2019 after beginning the year with Triple-A Omaha.

- The teams combined to leave 38 runners on base, with Northwest Arkansas stranding 26.

Gorman Hits Birthday Homer, Chiefs Lose 5-2
Third baseman Nolan Gorman celebrated his 19th birthday with his league-leading eighth homer but the Peoria Chiefs lost 5-2 on Friday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 15-17 on the season with one game left on the road trip.

Down 1-0, the Chiefs grabbed their first lead of the series in the fourth inning against South Bend starter Riley Thompson. Delvin Perez singled to center and Gorman launched his eighth homer of the season to just under the videoboard in right-field. Gorman leads the MWL in homers and hit his first as a 19-year old after crushing 24 professional homers as an 18-year old.

South Bend tied the game in the fourth inning with a two-out rally against Jacob Schlesener. JD Artis was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a pickoff error. Artis scored on a bunt single and South Bend left the bases loaded as Franyel Casadilla came out of the bullpen to strikeout Jon Sierra.

The hosts took the lead in the sixth inning with a double and two groundout against Casadilla. They plated two more for a 5-2 lead in the seventh as Fabian Blanco walked four of the five batters he faced and two runs scored on wild pitches.

Schlesener allowed two runs on two hits over 3 2/3 innings as he walked seven, hit one and struck out two. Casadilla allowed one run on two hits over 2 1/3 innings while walking one and striking out three. Blanco allowed two runs on four walks, one strikeout and no hits over 1/3 of an inning. Memphis

Redbirds Take Opener from Nashville, 7-5
The Memphis Redbirds (19-17) scored the first seven runs of the game and finished off a 7-5 win over the Nashville Sounds (Rangers) in the series opener Saturday night at AutoZone Park.

Each Redbird reached base at least once, and five different players had two of the club's 12 hits in the game.

Daniel Ponce de Leon moved to 3-1 on the season with 5.0 innings of work, allowing just two hits and two runs, one earned. He struck out three and walked five.

The Redbirds did not play their crispest game of the season, walking nine and committing three errors, but they did enough to pick up the victory. After Ponce de Leon, Ryan Meisinger came in and gave up three runs in 2.0 innings, but a pair of errors behind him made all three of his runs unearned.

Hunter Cervenka and Chris Beck hurled the final two frames and polished off the win. Beck stranded the bases loaded to end the contest.

Three different Redbirds had an RBI in the second inning, with John Nogowski, Ramon Urias, and Drew Robinson plating runs to open the scoring.

Tyler O'Neill and Andrew Knizner homered in the third and fourth innings, respectively, with both bombs being their fourth of the year. O'Neill scored three runs and stole a base, adding a walk and a single to his home run.

Former Redbird All-Star Patrick Wisdom played his first game back at AutoZone Park since being traded to the Texas Rangers, and he was presented his Triple-A National Championship ring before the game.
Springfield

Mieses grand slam, Capel walk-off cap dramatic 6-5 Cardinals win
A Johan Mieses grand slam followed by a Conner Capel walk-off single sent the Springfield Cardinals (14-21) home 6-5 winners in dramatic fashion over the Northwest Arkansas Naturals (13-21) on Saturday night at Hammons Field.

DECISIONS:
W: RHP Ronnie Williams (1-0)
L: RHP Grant Gavin (0-1)

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED:
- Capel's bases-loaded walk-off single was the game-winning hit, but it was Mieses's pinch-hit grand slam that pulled the Cardinals even at 5-5 after going seven innings without scoring a run.

- Cardinals DH Randy Arozarena put Springfield up 1-0 with an RBI double in the first, but the Naturals responded with four runs in the top of the second on a pair of RBI doubles by Kort Peterson and Nick Heath and an RBI triple by Khalil Lee. That 4-1 lead eventually turned into 5-1 and stood until the big final inning.

NOTABLES:
- Oviedo allowed five earned runs over 5.0 innings in his first Hammons Field start, striking out four and allowing six hits and five walks.

- The walk-off was the fourth of the year for the Cardinals against the Naturals.

- Springfield relievers Hector Mendoza and Ronnie Williams combined for 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Springfield

Perez allows just 2 hits, Cardinals beat Naturals 5-2

L: RHP Ofreidy Gomez (1-3)

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED:
- The first Double-A home run for Cardinals SS Jose Martinez put Springfield ahead for good at 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth.

- While the Cardinals never gave up the lead after the Martinez homer, the three runs Springfield put up in the sixth were a key cushion with the Naturals putting up a second run in the eighth. Redbirds Falter in 5-3 Loss to Nashville
Tommy Edman was 3-for-5 with a home run, Andrew Knizner had two doubles, and Lane Thomas tripled, but the Nashville Sounds (Rangers) topped the Memphis Redbirds Monday afternoon at AutoZone Park, 5-3.

Despite that extra-base success, the Redbirds (20-18) were 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. With a 3-1 lead in the third inning, Memphis left a runner on third base in the third-through-sixth innings and a runner on second in the seventh and eighth.

Austin Gomber matched a season high with eight strikeouts in 7.0 strong innings on the mound. He scattered seven hits, but one was a two-run home run that tied the game at 3 in the fifth. Gomber struck out the side in the fourth and sixth innings, and he needed only 10 pitches to turn the trick in the fourth.

Nashville (13-24) took a 4-3 lead in the eighth inning without a hit, as Delino DeShields walked, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third, and then scored on a sac fly.

The Sounds added another run in the ninth via a leadoff home run to widen the gap to 5-3. The Redbirds went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to end the ballgame.

Rangel Ravelo's hitting streak moved to six games with a 1-for-3 showing. Ramon Urias' eight-game streak ended, but he did reach base on an error and score a run.

Palm Beach takes series opener from Tampa
Palm Beach carried it's momentum from a recent 4-2 road trip back to Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in a 4-3 series opening victory over the Tampa Tarpons.

Palm Beach got on the board in the first inning when Scott Hurst smacked a opposite-field home run that hit the foul pole.

It would remain a 1-0 game through the sixth when Angel Rondon allowed his only run of the night. Tampa's Welfrin Mateo hit a home run far over the left field fence to knot the game up at one.

Rondon finished the night with seven innings pitched, allowing just that one run on two hits while striking out seven. Rondon lowered his season ERA to 2.04 through 39 2/3 innings and has allowed opposing hitters to just a .142 batting average against.

The Cardinals scored three runs in the home half of the seventh inning to take a commanding 4-1 lead. Luken Baker got the frame started with a deep double and was moved to third on Julio Rodriguez's single. Yariel Gonzalez drove home Baker on an RBI double and Rodriguez would move to third. After two shallow pop outs to first base, Rayder Ascanio came up in the clutch with a two out, two RBI single.

Tampa scored two more runs in the eighth to cut the defecit to just one run. With the tying run on first base, Ben Yokley induced an inning-ending groundout.

Yokley returned to the mound in the ninth and allowed a hit but was able to work around the runner en route to his second save of the young season.

Hurst and Gonzalez both had two hits for Palm Beach with six different hitters recording a base hit.

Angel Rondon has now gone four straight starts pitching 5+ innings, allowing two or less runs, and striking out at least four batters. After allowing 16 walks over his first 32 2/3 innings pitched, the 21-year-old did not walk a single batter in his seven innings on the hill during Monday's win.

Cardinals 3B prospect Nolan Gorman went 2-for-3 with a homer and a steal on Tuesday for Low-A Peoria.

Gorman has his ninth homer of the season, and the steal is the second on the year for the 19-year-old. The 19th pick of the 2018 draft, Gorman is hitting "only" .267 on the year, but his .378 on-base percentage and .578 slugging mark are more indicative of his talent. Gorman has quickly moved himself up the third base prospect ranks, and he has a chance to be a middle-of-the-order hitter for the Cardinals before the end of 2021.
