Going slightly better for him with fWAR, which likes his defense better. 1.1, on pace for ~4 for a full season. That’s not terrible, but I think the Phillies were looking for more.

He's been a plus defender by UZR, too. Pretty significantly, since his UZR/150 is on pace for a crazy 23. It will level off, but so far, concerns over his defense remaining abysmal seem to be somewhat misplaced.

Or, gasp, the numbers don’t mean much.

Outlier defense seasons exist, but it isn’t projectable.

I’m curious what year of this contract he bats under 220 for the entire season. Maybe soon.

Revisiting - Harper has been very very good in all three seasons with the Phillies so far. Possible MVP this year. Hittin .306 this year and hasn't hit lower than .260 since signing. Many thought he'd be some weak hitter for some reason.

141 wRC+
.386 wOBA
17% walk rate, 0.7 K/BB
Glove is no problem at all either.
Outperforming his contract even $/WAR wise. And outperforming it by a lot.

Would have been nice.

He could suck for the last 5 and the Phillies might still get a bargain

"Oh no," thinks the Phillies fan enjoying watching him play. "He might suck in 2031".

Ah yes, the notoriously thoughtful and optimistic Philly phans are delighted with their second place team and surely will not care when Harper is riding out his contract. Because they will always have 2021.

I mean, it is great he is playing at an MVP level this year. That was the plan for these seasons. But the Phillies better hurry up and contend with him because the last several years will probably be pretty rough.
