I have Comcast/Xfinity and have the “bundle”, phone, internet and tv, including two high def boxes. I have always been very pleased with their agents which I have spoken with as well as their service techs. I also have the app on my iPad which I have used to solve problems and get my tv up and running when a problem occurred. Every year, before January 19th, I call and talk to an agent or retention specialist and they have certain promotions that save money or can keep my bill from increasing, except for possibly a few bucks. This year I was able to get a better deal, with some more sports and movie channels and it even lowered my bill a few bucks. It is usually a two year deal. It may not always work for me, but it has for the past two years.

Welp. Pretty soon it's going to be:

Netflix
Hulu
Amazon Prime
NBC
CBS All Access
Disney+
HBO Max

I wonder if any of these start having year long contracts. Otherwise I can see a lot of people running through a cancel/resubscribe cycle to catch the shows they want. Some do that already, but it's easier to just keep it going. That or eventually there are some failures and consolidation.

Isn't Disney getting Hulu as part of their acquisition of 21st Century Fox? Or something along those lines?

Hulu is going to have more of Disney's "adult" programming.

Yes, but it will continue to be a separate product from the upcoming Disney+ service. However, there is at least some rumor(although it may just be mis-placed hope) that there might be a discounted bundle for those who do some combination of Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN+.

Will this eventually come full circle and it will be a better bargain to have a cable/satellite package again? (If programming keeps getting segmented, etc. based on the provider, Hulu, Netflix, and so on...)

It's kind of odd in that Netflix and Amazon aren't really alternatives to cable, they're an additional channel available only via streaming. So if anything it's an add on to cable.

YoutubeTV, Hulu, etc. are all still probably a little cheaper with less of a commitment to cable, but they further require internet capable of streaming which is not free.

I think that's true now, but my thought was that eventually Netflix would have almost everything, and there would be competing services that had almost the same thing and it just came down to who had a better service and presentation. That's how it looked at first. Netflix just kept acquiring more stuff. Didn't foresee all the exclusives and in-house services. Probably naive, in retrospect.

Cable could make a comeback, but the on demand would need to work well and have a lot of content. That's at least half of the appeal of Netflix, et al. You don't have to remember to record or save it, or work your schedule around what you're watching.

Most of the content through Charter(Spectrum) is on demand. Albeit with commercials, etc.
