Astronomers have identified the smallest known black hole—an object about 3.8 times as massive as the sun.
The black hole, part of a binary star system known as XTE J1650-500, is only about 15 miles (25 kilometers) in diameter,

Which means that one teaspoon of the the black hole weighs 5.6 billion tons.G. Keenan wrote:Astronomers have identified the smallest known black hole—an object about 3.8 times as massive as the sun.

yep, they're talking about its mass and not its physical size.

I didn't interpret "massive" literally enough. I see what they mean now.jim wrote:What do you mean GK?G. Keenan wrote:Something is off here:jim wrote:And since we are on the topics of black holes, an itty-bitty one was found out in nature...

Re: The LHC must never be allowed to open!
Do scientist have any idea of what percentage of the universe's mass is stored in black holes? I remember reading about how little visible matter makes up the universe (something like 4%), while dark matter makes up 22% and dark energy makes up 74%.
Are black holes considered to be composed of dark matter or visible matter? I've read that they fall into the dark matter group when calculating how much universal mass they take up, but obviously they have to be composed mostly of visible matter, as dark matter really doesn't get sucked into them, right?

Yeah, but that's not an actual black hole. That's just a black hole analog that has similar physics. Gravity isn't even the force being used there.jim wrote:And oh, by the way, has anyone checked lately to see if England is still around:
