Update: HOLLIDAY A CARD 7yr/120 million, p178

Post by number9 »

Ken Davidoff of newsday.com wrote:--As has become a weekly tradition here, my Sunday Insider can't be found on the Web. A quick recap: According to a person in the loop, Matt Holliday's top choices in free agency are: 1) Yankees; and 2) Mets. The Oklahoma native is apparently not intimidated by New York.

As of now, I'd say the Yankees don't want to make another large purchase like that, in the wake of last winter's shopping spree - and if they win it all, then the pressure from the yakosphere (trademark Neil Best) to get Holliday should alleviate.

The Mets? Based on Jeff Wilpon's words from a few weeks ago, they'll consider anything and everything. Of course, many industry folks are very skeptical that the Mets will actually do so.

Holliday's primary reservation about joining the Mets? Yup, hitting at Citi Field. Maybe they can alter the dimensions? Jerry Manuel hinted near the end of the season that wasn't impossible.

Yeah, I saw that. I'm gonna go ahead and take that with a big fat grain of salt.

If Holliday leaves, will he be one of the most hated players in Cardinal history? I only ask the question because of the famous error. But bolting for money would be salt in the wound.

I wouldn't say so.

For whatever reason, I agree that if Holliday leaves, the error will stick in the collective fan memory more prominently. If he stays, it was a boof by one of our own, like many others that have occurred in history. If he bolts, it was an unconscionable gaffe by a mercenary for hire, not a True Cardinal.

I mean, it's the same error either way. But memory and history are funny like that.

CYA! Don't let the wagon gate door hit you in the ... on your way out

Face it, we rented a free agent and standing ovations don't pay the rent.

Can't wait to heckle him when he comes back to town with the Mets.

Meh.

I want to believe more the Mets than the Yankees, he's stated he prefers the NL over and over again. Then again, he'd probably love to hit in the bandbox of Yankee stadium than the black hole in Queens.
