With just two hits in his previous 38 at-bats, Mike Gonzalez was an unlikely hero when he stepped to the plate in the 15th inning of the Cardinals’ June 11, 1917, game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Even more unlikely was his two-out steal of home.

(I did not see this one live)
@Joe Shlabotnik might have caught the newsreel at the local theater that evening.

Wednesday will mark 38 years since the Cardinals traded Ken Oberkfell for left-handed pitcher Ken Dayley and backup first baseman Mike Jorgensen. Dayley became a cornerstone of the Cardinals' bullpen during their '85 and '87 pennant seasons and Jorgensen stayed in the organization as a coach and interim manager after he retired.

25 years ago today, Fernandomania came to St. Louis as the Cardinals acquired former Cy Young Award winner Fernando Valenzuela in a six-player trade with the Padres.

"But before I'm through, I'll make it a point to come back and haunt them."

That guy made it into the Cardinals Hall of Fame?

58 years ago today, the Cardinals and Cubs agreed to the infamous Brock-for-Broglio trade. At the time, many observers thought the Cubs had gotten the better of the deal. They, of course, were wrong:

58 years ago today, Ken Boyer wore his lucky sports coat to the ballpark to change his luck. It worked, as he hit for the cycle and Lou Brock made his Cardinals debut:

We all know that Whitey Herzog's Cardinals teams loved to steal bases. But did you know that the White Rat stole home himself while playing his rookie season with the Senators? Check out the story below:
