Thanks for asking. As it turns out, it was the middle of the week and I had to go to school even though it was a double header. Thing was, we didn't know it was his last game. If we did, I know a bunch of us would have skipped school and headed down to the Baker Bowl to see if we could sneak in.
Now here's the thing - I didn't know it at the time but just before the Braves got to Philly, they played in Cincy and in the last game of that series, every Reds hitter was hitting the ball to left because they knew Babe had pulled a leg muscle. They scored like four runs and Ruth was so pissed he left the field in the 5th inning without even going to the dugout - straight to the clubhouse and gone.
So on the 30th, he starts the first game of that double header. The Phillies hit two balls to him that he couldn't get to - one going all the way to the wall and then end up scoring 3 runs that inning. He pulls the same stunt he did in Cincinnati and walked off the field.
When they get back to Boston he tells the owner he's quitting. Nobody knew he was done til it was in the papers.
