On this date in 1996, Todd Stottlemyre and Dennis Eckersley made their Cardinals debuts. Stottlemyre earned the win and Eckersley the save in a 5-3 victory over the Mets:

Wednesday will mark 21 years since Albert Pujols hit his first career home run. See the video of Pujols' first blast and look back at why Tony La Russa suggested Pujols might be better off in the minors:

On April 9, 1953, just two months after purchasing the Cardinals, Anheuser-Busch bought Sportsman's Park from Bill Veeck and the St. Louis Browns. The stadium was briefly renamed Budweiser Stadium, but MLB objected to naming the stadium after a beer brand and August A. Busch Jr. instead named it Busch Stadium. Two years later, Anheuser-Busch launched Busch Beer.

At its height, Branch Rickey’s innovative farm system produced such a wealth of quality players that he could trade away the defending National League batting champion and a future Hall of Famer and barely skip a beat. On April 11, 1932, the Cardinals traded outfielder Chick Hafey to the Reds for two players and an amount of cash that Reds president Sidney Weil said was one of the largest sums ever paid by Cincinnati in a trade.

On April 13, 1954, Tom Alston became the first black player in Cardinals history and Wally Moon homered in his first major-league at-bat. See why Alston's career was cut short and why Cardinals fans booed Moon just moments before his big blast:
