2018 MLB Draft

Post by InvincibleCakeEater »

Less than two weeks away.

Seen a few publications mocking Jackson Kowar, RHP, Florida to us at 19.

I know the knocks on him never playing with Wood, and that he's a 1B, but Seth Beer can [expletive] hit.

Jim Callis
19. Cardinals: Logan Gilbert, RHP, Stetson

Unless some of the first tier of prep pitchers lasts longer than expected, the second tier of college arms should start to come off the board around here. St. Louis gets mentioned mostly with pitchers ...
Has Kowar to the Twins immediately after us.

So, the Cards get a 1st round pick this year? Has the Spygate price been fully paid now?

Yes, Spygate has been paid.

We also have a compensatory pick and a competitive balance pick. We lose our second round pick for the signing of Greg Holland.

Seth Beer is a bat-only, 1B prospect who will go in the second round.

He didn't have anywhere near the season that Brent Rooker had in a better conference, and he was more athletic than Beer and had a better chance of staying in the OF and Rooker went 35th overall.

Beer can't throw, has a below average hit tool, and his only carrying tool is his power. I'd be ok with picking him at 43, but I can't get behind him at 19.

Our record in developing pitchers is pretty ridiculous at this point. If we draft a couple of arms early, we're almost guaranteed to see them in StL. But, it would be nice to get a fast moving bat or two. Even a corner position -- 1b, 3b, RF, LF -- would be just fine.

We need a SS of the future...and a hitter. If our best bet to get those is by drafting pitchers that we know how to develop and then flipping them at some point; so be it.

Keith Law's latest mock:
19. St. Louis Cardinals: Shane McClanahan, LHP, South Florida

McClanahan's bad second half seems to have really cost him; he was once considered a possibility to go second overall, and he now could end up in the 20s. There's some belief that the Cardinals will go for a college player here, but they've been seen at all the premium HS players' games too.
He has very good stuff, but he's been pretty pedestrian this year, was just beat up in the conference tournament, and his stuff was down in that start. He will move quickly, but you have to wonder if the Cardinals are looking for a fast moving starting pitcher with the glut they currently have. You generally just take what you believe to be the best talent in the MLB draft, and if you feel like you're getting sophomore McClanahan, he is definitely that. If you're getting AAC McClanahan, he's not really a first rounder at 91-93 with below average command and a fringey slider.

He had Cole Wilcox going #21 to the Brewers and he'd be interesting as a high upside arm, but high school righties have an "A ball" floor as well. I might roll the dice on the upside arm there.

McClanahan will make the major leagues barring injury, it's almost a certainty and the Cardinals have used this trick in the past with Wacha, Weaver, Dakota Hudson, Connor Jones, Zac Gallen- pouncing on college arms who fall further than they would have as sophomores with pretty good results.

He's got 3B Jared Groshans going to the Cubs at 24 and he's another player that I would heavily consider over the safer McClanahan.

Jarred Kelenic is the dream. A prep OF from Wisconsin who could end up the best player in the draft, or wash out at AA. He's super toolsy and has the potential to really hit. Law has him 14th to the Mariners.
