Draft Mistakes

Interesting little what if slideshow

Digging through the MLB draft archives to find the most painful mistakes, misses and oversights has become a bit of an annual tradition around SN baseball headquarters.

Judging by your response, baseball fans, you love reading about these “oops” moments as much as we love researching them. The idea again this year is to find the “what if?” picks (we’re only looking at the first round, including supplemental picks), where your favorite team took Player X but Player Y wound up actually being the star.

Kozma over Porcello is the definitive Cardinals answer yes?

I get that Porcello was/is the better player than Kozma. But, the amount of attention this draft pick receives is absurd. First off, Rick Porcello isn't that great of a pitcher. Sure, he's very good. In, what, 10 years he's put up 19 bWar and 25 fWAR. He's pretty good. Not great. But when he's brought up regarding this draft choice, it's like the guy already has a plaque in Cooperstown (which he never will). Further, during his tenure with the Tigers (the team that took him) his ERA hovered somewhere around 4.

He demanded and received a major league contract out of high school which is why he was taken 27th overall.

If people want to kvetch and moan about the Kozma draft pick, they should focus on guys like Frazier or Donaldson (who they missed twice).

Definitely one of the top 10 GRB dead horses.

Rick Porcello may be the only pitcher that has gone from leading the league in wins one season, to leading the league in losses the next.

interesting fact about one of our draft picks that year (2007)...with pick 202, we selected Oliver Marmol. who just happens to now be our new bench coach.

I would say this one is worse.
Cardinals, 1989

The Pick: OF Paul Coleman at No. 6
The Miss: 1B Frank Thomas, who went to the White Sox at No. 7

The Skinny: Yeah, this has to sting. The Cardinals wanted to grab a power bat with their first pick of the 1989 draft, and they settled on the prep outfielder from Texas instead of the All-American first baseman from Auburn. That didn’t turn out so well. By the time Coleman was out of affiliated baseball (after the 1993 season), Thomas had three top-10 AL MVP finishes, including the 1993 MVP (he would win it again in 1994). He finished his career with 521 homers, a .301 average, a .974 OPS, 1,704 RBIs and a spot in the Hall of Fame.
Although; if we had Thomas; we never would have had Gregg Jeffries.

TLR arrival made Big Mac inevitable. We would have traded Thomas for Dennis Martinez.
