1990's Pitcher Poll

Post by CardsofSTL »

The world is boring and baseball is still weeks away; so let's do a poll.

After the article the other day about the top 50 pitchers in Cardinal history; I thought of a few different poll ideas and settled on taking all of the Opening Day Starters from one particular decade; in this case; the 1990's; and seeing how they rank up against each other. Choose your starter based on the one you think was the best or the one that was your favorite and share your reasons below.

There are not ten options because some pitchers made more than one Opening Day start during the decade. For your information; the years and names of the pitchers who made each Opening Day start are listed below:

1990: Joe Magrane
1991: Bryn Smith
1992: Jose DeLeon
1993: Bob Tewksbury
1994: Bob Tewksbury
1995: Ken Hill
1996: Andy Benes
1997: Todd Stottlemyre
1998: Todd Stottlemyre
1999: Donovan Osborne

I thought Benes was a very good and underrated Cardinal.

Jose DeLeon. You can't lose as many games as he did and not be a good pitcher.

Believe me, I should know.

The first game I ever saw from behind home plate was a DeLeon start. He had some great movement on his pitches; but you know he led the league in losses two years during his career; with 19. But he kept getting chances so that says something about his stuff.

The great Bob Tewksbury leading the way so far. I expected to see Stottlemyre with more support.

Big fan of Alan Benes over Andy. Matt Morris anyone?

Matty Mo didn't make an opening day start in the 90s... So he's an option for another poll.

Gotcha.

Weird that he wasn’t in 98-99.

In '98 IIRC he had shoulder trouble early, and he missed all of '99 due to TJS.
