He will sign. You talk to a guy as you're picking and get a general feel that they'll sign when you're taking a guy that high. That's how the Cubs took Ryan Jensen instead of Allan at their pick.

I'm honestly not as high on him and think the Cards have a bad track record with raw, toolsy type high school hitters.

Yeah, the kid sounds like Plumber with more speed.

Big fan of the Fletcher pick.

Flores has been good all around. It's nice having baseball guys in there and not a bunch of MBA/JD dorks.

That Luhnow MBA dork wasn't half bad, though.

He (and Sid, Carlos, etc.) was sociopathic. Not unlike what's currently in the FO, but I feel better about actual baseball guys.

Luhnow builds a great team. How he does it... yikes.

Code: Select all

Pick Rank FV FirstName LastName Position Age School Strengths
19 18 45 Zack Thompson LHP 21.6 Kentucky secondaries, delivery
58 105 40 Tre Fletcher CF 18.1 Deering HS power/speed combo
The Cardinals scooped up a falling value for the second straight year, as Thompson was in the mix close to pick 10. He’ll probably move quickly like most Cardinals college draftees do, in part because Thompson has such distinguished changeup feel and the 3000-plus rpm curveball to get whiffs. Fletcher was a bit of a surprise because not all teams even bothered seeing him. He reclassified as a 2019 during March, he had a strong commitment to Vanderbilt, and it was rainy in the northeast this spring, making it hard to scout him, not to mention the weak competition. There are arguably 60s on his power, speed, and arm but there’s a lot of risk.

Could be a good starter. The trend, from what I've read, is that teams are going with arsenal-heavy pitchers in the draft these days and he fits that mold.

3 (96), Tony Locey, RHP, Georgia

MLB Pipeline Scouting Report:
Locey teamed with Jake Fromm to help Houston County High (Warner Robins, Ga.) win the Georgia state 5-A baseball championship as a senior in 2016. Both headed to the University of Georgia, where Fromm has starred at quarterback and Locey has been a key starter on a Bulldogs team that won a school-record 21 Southeastern Conference games this season. While there's debate as to whether he winds up as a starter or reliever in the long run, there's no question that he has one of the best arms in college baseball's top conference. Locey operates at 92-95 mph and touches 97 with his fastball, using his high-three-quarters arm slot to create downhill plane. He maintains his velocity throughout his starts and figures to hit 100 mph if he works shorter stints out of the bullpen. His low-80s slider can be sharp and a solid pitch when he commands it, and he also shows promising shape on a curveball that's a work in progress. Mostly about power, Locey hasn't shown much of a changeup. He's strong and physical, though to remain a starter he'll have to do a better job of repeating his delivery and commanding his pitches. If he does become a reliever, he has late-inning potential and perhaps a chance to become a closer.

Pretty uninspiring so far. 5 of first 7 picks have been college pitchers.
