The Cardinals’ grip on their division lead tightened ever so slightly the moment three Milwaukee defenders peeled off on what seemed a routine two-out popup Tuesday night. The ball dropped. The bases cleared. And the Cardinals parlayed the shot of momentum into a 9-4 win over the Brewers at Busch Stadium.

The immediate significance was obvious: The Cardinals increased their division lead over Milwaukee to four games while also maintaining a half-game advantage over the Cubs. But could it also be the start of something more?

The Cardinals, who entered the night with a 53.8 percent postseason probability, per FanGraphs, have stayed afloat this season despite watching some of their best laid plans go awry. That included watching their Opening Day center fielder end up back in the Minors after losing his swing, and seeing a once-steady starter lose his command, then his rotation spot.

What Harrison Bader and Michael Wacha didn’t lose, however, was another chance to make it right.

Tuesday offered a glimpse of what-could-still-be if the Cardinals can squeeze more consistent production from a pair of players who can dramatically alter the look of this roster. Fresh from his stint in Triple-A, Bader reached base three times, scored two runs and made a five-star catch that helped limit the Brewers’ scoring in the sixth.

Wacha, though he was pulled too early to factor in the decision, offered the Cardinals four shutout innings in his second appearance since being reinstated in the rotation. He struck out five and faced little resistance from a Brewers offense that had scored 24 runs over the weekend against the Nationals.
Bader worked closely with Memphis hitting coach Jobel Jimenez until Jimenez was promoted to the Major League staff on Aug. 12. By then, Bader was already feeling back in sync. He closed his stay in Memphis with an eight-game hitting streak, during which he mashed six homers, tallied 12 RBIs and scored 16 runs.

“Just regrouping, pressing the resetting button and going out there to play in a non-pressured zone, if you will, down in Triple-A, I feel really good,” Bader said. “I’m proud of the work I did down there. I’m a little sharper. I’m just looking forward to playing. It’s going to be great to put a Cardinals uniform back on. Even though I was only gone for [23] days, I missed every second of it.”

How Bader will be utilized moving forward will be influenced, of course, by how he plays. Bader started on Tuesday largely for matchup reasons -- he’s a career .256/.328/.488 hitter against lefties -- and he enters a crowded outfield mix that also includes Marcell Ozuna, Dexter Fowler, Lane Thomas, Tommy Edman and Yairo Munoz.
• Tyler O'Neill (left wrist strain) is expected to join Memphis on Wednesday to begin a rehab assignment that could extend through the end of August. O’Neill, who has been sidelined since Aug. 1, resumed taking on-field batting practice this week.

• Jose Martinez (right AC joint sprain) will follow O’Neill to Memphis, though not until later this week, meaning he won't be ready to come off the injured list on Wednesday, his first date of eligibility.

• Brett Cecil (left hand Carpal Tunnel syndrome) continues to face hitters in live BP sessions, but there's no indication that he’s “on his way back to our level” this season, Shildt acknowledged. Cecil has been on the IL all season.

• Austin Gomber (left biceps discomfort) was expected to throw a live BP session either Tuesday or Wednesday as he tries to work his way back towards competition. Gomber’s last appearance was on May 13 for Memphis.

I wish it was a day game. I need an excuse to not work this afternoon.

Do you really need an excuse? You're a short timer; that is excuse enough.

GDTs that produce winners do not suck.

And I appreciate the back up from you and others when cosmic forces prevent me from posting these.
