KK to start on DL; PdL likely in rotation

Post by Jocephus »

Kwang-Hyun Kim (back) will begin the season on the injured list.

Kim is progressing nicely as he recovers from a back injury, but he just doesn't have enough time to get stretched back out after missing a couple weeks of action. The left-hander is slated to make a start Saturday, with the goal of going 2-3 innings. He might wind up missing just one turn in the rotation. With Kim and Miles Mikolas (shoulder) slated for stints on the injured list, John Gant and Daniel Ponce de Leon are expected to open the season in the Cardinals' rotation.

Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said Thursday that there's a "good likelihood" Daniel Ponce de Leon opens the season in the team's rotation.

The skipper made the statement after Ponce de Leon walked six and allowed three runs over 4 1/3 innings versus the Astros. Ponce de Leon did pitch well in his first three outings this spring before struggling his last two times out. He's still probably the best option to hold down a rotation spot while Miles Mikolas (shoulder) and Kwang-Hyun Kim (back) are out, although Kim might miss just one turn. John Gant will also be part of St. Louis' rotation.

Kwang-Hyun Kim (back) threw 68 pitches over five innings in a simulated game on Tuesday.

The rehabbing left-hander struck out eight and allowed only two walks. Kim will travel back with the Cardinals as they prepare for Thursday's home opener against the Brewers and could join the starting rotation at some point during that series with Milwaukee. He landed on the IL before Opening Day because of a back issue that popped up in early March and affected his ability to get stretched out.

Kwang-Hyun Kim (back) will throw another simulated game before the Cardinals consider activating him.

There had been some thought that Kim might be able to slide into the starting rotation this weekend against the Brewers after he threw 68 pitches over five innings in a simulated game on Tuesday, but the Cardinals will play it safe. Daniel Ponce de Leon and John Gant will remain locked into starting jobs for at least one more turn.

Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said Saturday that Kwang-Hyun Kim (back) will throw 85-90 pitches in a simulated game on Sunday.

Based on the timing of the simulated game, Kim appears to be lined up to take Daniel Ponce de Leon's spot in the Cardinals' starting rotation. The 32-year-old left-hander has been sidelined since mid-March due to a back issue. Barring any setbacks, it seems like he should be back next weekend.
