The Pirates took their first loss of the season against the Cubs, 5-1, at Wrigley Field on Saturday, but they may have also lost a young star player in the short term.

Ke’Bryan Hayes was pulled from Saturday’s game against the Cubs in the third inning with left wrist discomfort, the Pirates announced.

Hayes was examined in the top of the first inning after he flexed his left wrist following a dive back to first base on a pickoff attempt from Jake Arrieta. It wasn’t the first time in the game the young third baseman showed discomfort in the hand. After fouling off a pitch from Arrieta before drawing a walk, Hayes put his left hand to his back then flexed it.

Hayes remained in the field in the first and second innings, but the Pirates opted to be cautious when his turn in the lineup came back around.
