An abysmal start to the year has now reached historic heights for Oakland. The A’s 0-6 record matches the 1916 Philadelphia A’s for the worst start to a season in franchise history. That 1916 club won its seventh game and ended up losing a franchise-record 117 games, which is the third-highest loss total by any team in the modern era.

To call this opening to the 2021 campaign a stunning development would be an understatement. Coming off their third straight postseason appearance and first American League West championship since 2013, the A’s entered this season with visions of a deep playoff run as serious contenders for a World Series title. So far, their current pace is leading them in a concerning direction.

The last time any franchise lost its first six games in a season was 2016, when both the Braves and Twins suffered the same fate. Each team got off to an 0-9 start, ultimately finishing the year with 93 and 103 losses, respectively.
Count me as one surprised by the A's bad start.

Reds must be juicing the visiting team's balls and humidoring their own.

Just as George Springer was nearing his return from a left oblique strain, the Blue Jays’ star center fielder felt tightness in his right quad while running the bases on Tuesday.

The new injury cut Springer’s baserunning session short, and he underwent an MRI. The Blue Jays are waiting on the results of that test, manager Charlie Montoyo said prior to Wednesday afternoon’s series finale against the Rangers at Globe Life Field.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that Major League Baseball is investigating balls collected from Trevor Bauer's start against the Athletics on Wednesday.

According to Rosenthal, the balls had "visible markings and were sticky, and were sent to the league offices for further inspection." As the reporter also points out, it remains to be seen if the league can prove that Bauer is the one who applied the sticky substance, so there's no obvious discipline coming even if they rule that there was a banned substance on the baseball. This is part of a reported crackdown by MLB to eliminate the use of foreign substances on baseballs in part because of the increased spin rate over the past few years. Just something to keep an eye on.

Hasn't Bauer been daring the league to crackdown on pitchers for using foreign substances for some time? Seems like he gave in and started using them himself on a consistent basis a year or two ago, and since then has all but said he's doing it, again, daring the league to crackdown on pitchers.

If they're going to test Bauer's game balls, they should be checking, well, a ton of pitchers. Given that spin rates are readily available in real time, this could be monitored on a relatively easy basis from my understanding.
