Few teams made bigger offseason moves than the Cardinals and Mets. St. Louis added eight-time Gold Glove Award-winning third baseman Nolan Arenado in a trade with Colorado, while New York worked out a deal with Cleveland for four-time All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor.

Those stars should be on display on Thursday afternoon, when their teams wrap up their four-game series at Busch Stadium at 1:15 p.m. ET. Be sure to tune in, as the finale will be MLB.TV’s Free Game of the Day (Blackout restrictions apply, although live audio still will be available through MLB.TV in local markets.)

While Arenado has enjoyed a relatively smooth transition to St. Louis, the same cannot be said for Lindor, who is still trying to get things going in a Mets uniform. Lindor has walked (13) nearly as much as he’s struck out (14), but the hits simply are not falling. After an 0-for-3 performance in the opener of Wednesday’s doubleheader dropped his average to .157 with a .478 OPS, Lindor was not in the Mets’ starting lineup for the first time this season in the nightcap.

Mets (12-13, 2nd in NL East)
Cardinals (18-13, 1st in NL Central)

The Mets’ win in the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader snapped the Cardinals’ six-game winning streak, but St. Louis still has won 10 of its last 13. While New York hasn’t gotten things going in 2021, that’s true of everyone in the NL East, where the five teams are separated by a total of two games.

Mets -- Taijuan Walker (1-1, 3.00 ERA in five starts)
Cardinals -- John Gant (2-2, 2.16 ERA in five starts)

The 2020 season is a big opportunity for both of these pitchers. Walker started only four games in 2018-19 due to injury before a stellar return during the shortened 2020 campaign, so he is looking for his first full season since 2017 with Arizona. Gant is getting a chance to be in the rotation after spending all of 2019-20 in the St. Louis bullpen. Both pitchers are capitalizing thus far.

The Cardinals’ fleet-footed center fielder, Harrison Bader, is a fly ball-catching machine. Since Bader’s first full Major League season in 2018, he is tied with the Brewers’ Lorenzo Cain for the most Outs Above Average -- a Statcast-based defensive metric -- among outfielders. Bader also got off to a strong start at the plate after being activated from the injured list last week, homering in back-to-back games on Sunday and Monday.
Image
The Mets got a reprieve from facing the Cardinals’ Paul DeJong in 2020, with teams not straying outside of their region during the pandemic-shortened schedule. But DeJong is now back to tormenting the Mets in this series, with four hits, including a double and a home run. He’s slugging .800 against them in his career. On Wednesday, DeJong became the first player to notch 21 extra-base hits in his first 22 games against the Mets.

The New York Mets are 6-9 on the road this season and are heavy favorites to beat the St. Louis Cardinals who are 9-7 at home. The Mets have a better than 55% chance of winning based on 10,000 game simulations generated one play at a time by the AccuScore Simulation Supercomputer. Both starters have a relatively low chance of having a quality start. John Gant has a 30% chance of a QS and Taijuan Walker a 29% chance. If John Gant has a quality start the Cardinals has a 61% chance of winning. His simulated strikeout to walk ratio is 2.4 and he has a 14% chance of having a 5 to 1 K/BB ratio. When he has a 5/1 ratio the Cardinals win 45%. If Taijuan Walker has a quality start the Mets has a 73% chance of winning. His simulated strikeout to walk ratio is 2.7 and he has a 19% chance of having a 5 to 1 K/BB ratio. When he has a 5/1 ratio the Mets win 66%. In simulations we tracked the batter for each team that was most productive based his average hits, walks and RBI per simulation. The most productive batter for the St. Louis Cardinals is Nolan Arenado who averaged 2.5 hits+walks+RBI. He has a 43% chance of having a big game with 3+ Hits, Walks, RBI and if he has a big game the Cardinals have a 55% chance of winning. The most productive batter for the New York Mets is J.D. Davis who averaged 2.63 hits+walks+RBI. He has a 46% chance of having a big game with 3+ Hits, Walks, RBI and if he has a big game the Mets have a 71% chance of winning.

Well we got to Walker a couple times this spring. But he also had some solid innings vs us, too. Both these cats need the bottom of the zone to be open for business. Although, I think, Gant can find strikes in other places if he's not getting it at the knees.

Keys to the Game: Is Dylan healthy today? Who's off limits in the pen? Does Marp start on the bench where he belongs?
