Can the Angels keep Shohei Ohtani? A payroll crisis looms in Los Angeles

https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/ ... os-angeles
Ohtani is in line to play 2022 under the terms of the original deal he signed with the Angels, before becoming eligible for arbitration in the winter of 2022-23 and free agency in the fall of 2023. He could be 29 years old when he hits the open market.

"He'll get as many years as he wants," mused an evaluator. "Let's say he gets five years [at] $50 million a year."

"At least," another long-time evaluator said.
Trout, who just turned 30, is set to make $37.12 million annually for each of the next nine seasons. Rendon, 31, will make $36.6 million next season, and then $38.6 million in each of the four years that follow.

What that means is that Angels are obligated to pay those two players about $75 million through the 2026 season -- and Ohtani may well be more expensive.

Signing Ohtani to a multiyear deal might mean owing something in the range of $120 million to $130 million to just three players.

This for a franchise that has never gone over a luxury-tax threshold. According to Cot's, this year's payroll of $182 million is the Angels' highest ever.

I have no idea why Ohtani didn't just wait however much time it was and sign as an unrestricted free agent, although I hope he gets every penny he deserves.

Pretty cool, and highly deserved, given Ohtani may have just had the most outstanding single season in MLB history.

Anyway, this line from the espn article is certainly a typo, but it's breaking my brain figuring out what the author was actually trying to say:
He became the first player to combine 45-plus homers with 25-plus stolen bases and five-plus steals, and he did it while making 23 starts.

8.1 fWAR, 9.0 bWAR for Shohei this season.

Puts Trout’s four 9.5+ WAR seasons in perspective.

Too bad Trout has wasted his best years in LA.

Same goes for Ohtani probably.
