Jack Flaherty (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Thursday.

It will be his first time throwing off a mound since he went down with a strained right shoulder three weeks ago. “I’m cautiously optimistic he’ll be back,” Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said. “In what role, I cannot say. When? I clearly can’t say. I don’t want to feel like we’ve got to push it. He’s on the trajectory that if he can stay healthy and move forward . . . I think there’s enough schedule left for him to do something for us to help us.” There's been some talk that Flaherty and Dakota Hudson (elbow) could potentially form a piggyback situation with the big club later this month, although those plans are still very much up in the air.

They were talking about Flaherty and Mikolas potentially piggybacking earlier....they are obsessed with piggybacking.

Might make more sense for Flaherty to be used as an opener rather than out of the pen though; even if he can only go two or three innings it would be better to keep him on a starter's routine.

Dakota Hudson (elbow) will start on Friday for Triple-A Memphis.

Hudson is moving up to Triple-A after making three rehab appearances for Double-A Springfield. The right-hander is working his way back from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery, and the 26-year-old could be back with the Cardinals before the end of the season to help with their playoff push.

Did the rule for being postseason eligible change when the September rosters were reduced? Would Dakota be eligible for the postseason roster?

I could be wrong, but I think that only applies to players acquired from out of the organization or players that have never had MLB experience. It shouldn’t apply to someone coming back from injury.

Won't lie, I'd feel quite a bit better seeing Hudson and Flaherty in any capacity on this team.
