I feel like Shildt is forced to play Russian Roulette with the bullpen.

And it works.
Five-sixths of the time, it works every time

Is anyone else getting flashbacks of 2011 around this time?

I agree dmarx. If he didn't IBB to load the bases and Yelich hits a single, Shildt would have gotten roasted for letting Yelich beat you.

Normally I would never do what Shildt did (ibb to load bases).

But I bet Shildt was thinking it was Hader vs Justin Miller in the 10th and figured a tie was likely gonna be a loss.

So I understand the logic.

Yes, that's what I was trying to say.

With Yelich at the plate with the tying run in scoring position, the odds of winning really were not much different than Yelich on first and the winning run in scoring position. Let's say you pitch to Yelich and he ties it up. Then the winning run is in scoring position...even if you escape that inning tied! This is because of the stupid ghost runner in extra innings. The Cards' best chance to win it was in the 9th and avoid extras

I don't understand how umps blow those calls at 1B
Too much noise. They are looking at the feet and listening for the pop of the glove. If its too noisy, you don't here the pop so your left with your peripheral vision. Not ideal.
