Based on the lack of Cardinal offense all night long, no it was not.Mdcardfan60 wrote: ↑May 14 22, 12:40 pmIt was 3-1 when McFarland came in. That’s not close?CardsofSTL wrote: ↑May 14 22, 8:24 amFriday's game wasn't close. If he had used Helsley; that would have been ridiculous.
And making a comment like Do your thing isn't criticizing; it's deliberately trying to get a rise out of other posters and it's being a dik.

Today I learned that 3-1 games in the 8th inning aren’t close. Learn something new everyday.

Runners on 1st and second and a counter handed batter, IIRC. Then backup catcher who can’t hit. Guy PHing off IL first time in 3/4 of a year and backup catcher hits.
Maybe McFarland is wrong to use there but why is he on the roster? He’s not Brooks or Naughton or Woodford. He was signed to be effective.

Besides the tying run being on deck if you get through the top of the 8th still down 2, what context am I missing?

A continuation of poor at bats by the Cardinals. If we are using hindsight 20/20 arguments; then even if the Cardinals pitchers had shut down the Giants; the Cardinals would have still lost the game.dmarx114 wrote: ↑May 14 22, 2:25 pmBesides the tying run being on deck if you get through the top of the 8th still down 2, what context am I missing?

We had 8 base runners in 7 innings, so I disagree that this was a night of poor at bats.CardsofSTL wrote: ↑May 14 22, 2:27 pmA continuation of poor at bats by the Cardinals. And I am certainly not using 20/20 hindsight. That’s why I bumped my original post which said McFarland should not be used in 1 or 2 run games.
Frustrating Oli doesn’t realize this.

Agree to disagree? Re: Cards re-sign McFarland
At this point, it’s become pretty clear the Cardinals front office is clearing out struggling players and bringing up players who produce at AAA.
Yepez, Donovan, Walsh replacing the struggling DeJong, Dickerson, Whitley, Brooks etc.
McFarland is not a good pitcher. He’s not horrid, but he relies on good fortune with batted ball variance and should be a depth piece in the bullpen who doesn’t ever pitch in leverage situations.
If he doesn’t improve soon, you could see another struggling veteran sent out for a young player actually producing.

Re: Cards re-sign McFarland
Luis Garcia is pitching very well for SDP. Little different pitch mix and way of achieving results, but just as effective, if not moreso.
Cardinals letting him go to re-sign McFarland and then sign Corey Dickerson was always laughable.
