Btw, this is some good investigative journalism on the Pirates situation. Because their stadium is publicly financed and operated by a public sports authority, the local paper there was able to FOIA financial information (which the Pirates fought for two years) on stadium revenues.

The short answer is that the Pirates' payroll is in most (if not all) years covered by ticket sales and concessions. So the $100mil that the Pirates' owner gets from TV revenue, and the $30mil+ they get in revenue sharing, is gravy.
