Good post and agree but another thing to think about is that one month less of an expired contract guy is now a lower prospect value.Transmogrified Tiger wrote: ↑June 30 22, 12:45 pmThis made me curious. Using this year's playoff format for both years:Big Amoco Sign wrote: ↑June 30 22, 12:24 pmI said this in the Muddle thread but it feels like it's better from a leverage perspective to wait until the deadline. Some teams are still in it that may not be then.
Last year on June 30th
- 19 teams in playoff position or within 3 games
- 20 teams in playoff position or within 5 games
Last year on July 30th
- 14 teams in playoff position or within 3 games
- 20 teams in playoff position or within 5 games
This year on June 30th
- 15 teams in playoff position or within 3 games
- 18 teams in playoff position or within 5 games
Given that 12 teams definitionally have to be in playoff position at all times, based on what we saw last year I think you'll probably have a similar playoff picture in terms of depth as you do today.
Now what could change is who is in that picture. On June 30th last year the NL's 3rd wild card would've been held by the Cubs, and by the end of July they had traded away more than a third of their roster. So while I wouldn't necessarily expect the depth of teams selling to be greater, the teams that do end up selling may be a better match for what you want.

Moz has had a really bad run of things with free agents.

I think many people understood that he was likely to struggle at the end of the contract, but it would work out overall, and it did.CardsofSTL wrote: ↑July 7 23, 4:35 pmPeralta? Ended stinker but he earned his money in the first couple seasons.
