I don't even think it's that. If the Cardinals wanted the opener strategy, they'd made their personnel and staff decisions along that train of thought, which they haven't. If Mo wanted Marmol, Maddux, etc. to implement an opener strategy, they would.MinorLeagueGuy wrote: ↑November 24 21, 11:56 am
The biggest problem with this scenario is its in the hands of old baseball heads like Mike Maddux. Some new age guy would get miles more out of that strategy.

In theory. It doesn't mean those humans would/could wrap their brains around those concepts fully. Guys that have been in the game for as long as Maddux has(career, coach) don't always flow like water when it comes to amendments to Baseball 101.Lesson wrote: ↑November 24 21, 11:58 amI don't even think it's that. Agree. Dusty Baker is as old school as it gets and Astros told him how it was going to be when he was hired and he coached completely different than ever before.Lesson wrote: ↑November 24 21, 11:58 amI don't even think it's that. Maddux is there to coach up the pitching, not set usage strategies.

Does that read like he’s looking for a 5-7 year deal with a lower AAV; or he’s going to play for another 5-7yrs and bet on himself with shorter (1 or 2 w/option year) deals at higher cost for more pay over period?

Reads like he's looking for a longer deal.
Matz will pick up velocity when he's in the bullpen in 2024.

Matz has never really been a high-velocity guy though. I think what you see is what you get. He's essentially throwing the same fastball that he was throwing 2 or 3 years ago, with relatively similar results. Slider velocity has dropped slightly, but didn't seem to impact overall results.
Haltz may be right. We may see that decline in 2 or 3 years. He's 30 now. Typically velocity decline normally happens at around age 27-28. I would have preferred a 3 year deal, but if there is some decline and he ends up in the bullpen or at the back of the rotation by that 4th year, it's not a mountain of money to pay.

That Eno Sarris post is bothering me. Those numbers are pretty intertwined with count, when you need to throw a strike you take a little off and hitters are looking fastball and vice versa. Hitters slug 1.000 against Matz on 3-0 and .300 on 0-2 and everything in-between.
