This isn’t a critique of Seager and Semien, but the Rangers could still be quite bad next year. They weren’t close.

Yeah this is not a team that cried out “just a star middle infield away from contention.”MrCrowesGarden wrote: ↑November 29 21, 6:26 pmThis isn’t a critique of Seager and Semien, but the Rangers could still be quite bad next year. They weren’t close.

I think I saw roughly 0 innings of Ranger baseball last year. Do they have some prospects at least? Did they get anything for Gallo?

They add about 13 wins. They got two stud pitchers in a year coming up.
AL West is going to be really good if Angels can make like two good moves.
Rangers still have all star Adolis Garcia. The guy Mo traded because he tripped.

But as always, the reason you sign Semien and Seager this year is you can’t sign them next year.heyzeus wrote: ↑November 29 21, 7:00 pmYeah this is not a team that cried out “just a star middle infield away from contention.”MrCrowesGarden wrote: ↑November 29 21, 6:26 pmThis isn’t a critique of Seager and Semien, but the Rangers could still be quite bad next year. The A's may sell off all of their talent and have a better record than the Rangers next year. The value in going from 60 wins to 70 wins is pretty low nothing so doesn't seem like a smart move. These type of moves work better for a team like the Blue Jays last year when they got Springer - getting a top free agent when the rest of the team about to peak. The Rangers have no rotation, no bullpen and not much of a lineup, and limited immediate help from the minors. Most likely when the Rangers help arrives these free agents will be on the back end of their deals and production.
That said - good for the Rangers in trying for their fans and S&S for getting the contacts.

The problem with building this way is that if one of these contracts goes poorly... they are done for a decade.
Everyone complains that the Cardinals refuse to spend money... the reality is, they are careful with it. Avoiding 10 year contracts... and just continue to build from within. The Cardinals are always competitive, and always in the mix. No need to risk their future on contracts like these.
That said... good luck Rangers. They are my favorite baseball team in the state of Texas... lol

24 hours ago the Rangers had zero dollars guaranteed after 2022 and they play in the 4th biggest metro area(and the top 3 all have 2 teams), they aren’t punting on the possibility of being good for any stretch if one of those deals goes poorly.
The problem with this route isn’t really a problem, it’s that making these high profile deals shines a spotlight on just how barren the current roster is. Even after the spending spree they still need probably a half dozen starting caliber hitters/SP, especially in a division with 4 teams going for it. Semien and Seager isn’t a particularly inefficient way of spending(it’s easier to get a surprise 3 win season than a surprise 7 win season), but they don’t change the reality of their current roster.
