Christian Colon's NL Central comments

Post by mikechamp »

These comments came from a chat with former MLB player Christian Colon that occurred on December 9. He recently retired, was/is a big fan of MLB Trade Rumors and apparently wanted to do a chat.

I'm going to be honest: even though he was a former Red (and Royal and Marlin), there's not a lot of NL Central questions in this one. However, I included a lot of bonus Q&As because this was one of the funnest and most insightful chats I've ever shared. In addition to fans, he had former teammates and many friends send in messages, too. I highly encourage you to click on the link and read the entire thing. I'm including some of the highlights, but (for the most part) it was a really fun read.

It also made me long for the interviews we used to do on here. Now that everyone is locked out, perhaps players and/or coaches would be more open to doing a chat or interview on here. I get that they're not sitting around doing nothing, but it's a way to interact with the fans since things like the Winter Warmup and Cardinals Caravan probably won't happen.

The link to the entire chat can be found here: https://www.jotcast.com/chat/live-chat- ... 12014.html

Who were some teammates who stood out to you along the way?

Christian Colon
Suarez with Reds. Gordon, Royals. Acuña with Braves.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
In your opinion, since you played for the Reds, does the Cincinnati Reds organization look like they will truly ever win a championship for the fans?

Christian Colon
Yes soon too believe or not.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Are you going to pursue the coaching career? I think you should work in the Reds organization.

Christian Colon
Yes I am. I love the Reds org; one of the best. We will see what opportunities come up.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Did you have a favorite place to play on the road in MLB?

Christian Colon
Chicago. Both Sox and Cubs.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
No one knows if this was legit or not, but given there were other friends sending in messages, I'm going with Yes.

It’s Senzel, love u brother. Big inspiration. Hope u and the family are well.

Christian Colon
The man. You special kid. As a person you are and as a player of course as well.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Hey Mr. Colon! I'm a Reds fan, how much did you enjoy playing with Cincy?

Christian Colon
Loved it so much it was a lot of fun! Great group and org!

David Bell is special.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
What was your favorite ballpark to visit?

Christian Colon
Wrigley Field
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Who do you think is the best player in the game currently?

Christian Colon
Nolan Arenado.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Would you have signed for less money etc if it meant another World Series ring shot?

Christian Colon
Absolutely
-----------------------------------------------------------------
How closely do MLB/MiLB players follow rumors (especially during Trade Deadline season)?

Christian Colon
All the time, every couple hours to be honest.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
What’s the hardest part about playing in the MLB?

Anthony Franco
The lifestyle playing in the MLB is hardest. You start looking around and comparing your game and life when you don’t have to do that. Just go out and compete.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
What's it like to win a World Series?

Christian Colon
Words can’t describe but if I had to: When you are really really really hungry and you finally eat get something in your belly lol. That thankful happy feeling.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Not sure if this is accurate, but according to BR you were represented by the Boras Corporation and then switched representation. What made you drop Boras?

Christian Colon
I def regret doing that no doubt.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Mr. Colon, thank you so much for doing this chat and congratulations on your career. What one or two issues do you see as the most important for the MLBPA in the current bargaining? If there was one thing you could change, what would it be? Thanks again.

Christian Colon
I think the fact that it has reached the media is very hard to negotiate that way. Players are trying to set up things for the next generation and owners are very smart business people and they have to have respect for one another and get it done asap.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
What are your positions on the rule change proposals? i.e., expanded playoffs, robo umps, runner on 2nd to start the 10th...

Christian Colon
Expanded playoffs. That’s it for now.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
I know every MLB player looks back at their career differently and through a different lens, but knowing what you do now, do you have any regrets? Would you have done anything differently throughout your professional career? Advice you wish you had taken (or not taken)? Thank you for doing this chat. Much appreciated.

Christian Colon
Absolutely we all have regrets but at the same time I am happy with what I was able to accomplish and that’s bigger than my regrets. Thankful for that.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
What do you think of these huge contracts that are being signed?

Christian Colon
Would go higher AAV. Less years.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Would you ever think of joining a rebuild if meant getting more money?

Christian Colon
Idk. I love winning too much.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Worst umpire?

Christian Colon
They all bad lol.
No, that’s a tough job to be honest haha. They are grinders. They get after it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
What's your opinion of defensive shifts? Should they be banned?

Christian Colon
No, I think it’s part of the game. Educated guesses are important. The game is too hard.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
How was the feeling like when you were finally called up to the big leagues?

Christian Colon
I cried I was so happy. Even one day was worth it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
How do you deal with difficult teammates in the clubhouse?

Christian Colon
You learn to accept them and love them for who they are.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
What advice would you give to young players who one day aspire to make it to MLB?

Christian Colon
Close the gap between your strengths and weaknesses. You don’t have to be perfect and someone’s opinion shouldn’t define who you are. Good or bad. Just listen and be thankful and apply what works for you.

“How do you deal with difficult teammates in the clubhouse?

You learn to accept them and love them for who they are.”

Simple yet profound.
