Mark Polishuk's NL Central comments

Post by mikechamp »

These comments came from a chat with MLB Trade Rumors' Mark Polishuk that occurred on April 9.

A fair amount of questions, given he didn't hold a chat last week. No bonus Q&As, though, as nothing was really bonus-worthy.

The link to the entire chat can be found here: https://www.jotcast.com/chat/mlbtr-live-chat-12848.html

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Do you think Justin Upton would be a good fit for the Reds?

Mark Polishuk
Not to say that Upton wouldn't be sparked by a change of scenery or a change of role, but he's also been basically a replacement-level player for three yeas now. The jury is out on what he can actually bring a team in 2022.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Is Mikolas hurt still? He looked like it today.

Mark Polishuk
Mikolas has barely pitched in the last two years, no surprise he's a little shaky to start off.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
What would Montas cost St. Louis?

Mark Polishuk
As Montas is controlled through 2023, the A's would have a higher asking price than they did for Manaea or Bassitt. They'd at least ask for someone in the Liberatore/Walker/Gorman tier, not that STL would deal from that trio.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
When is Oneil Cruz getting the call up? Does he sign a Hayes type deal?

Mark Polishuk
Probably before April is over. And Cruz wouldn't get as much as Hayes did, but it would be something in the Eloy/Robert range.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Still a chance for a Hosmer trade to the Cubs now that the season has started?

Mark Polishuk
The Padres will always be open to moving that contract at any time, so sure. I don't think there's a great financial fit with the Cubs, unless Heyward would be open to waiving his no-trade clause.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Trent Grisham is looking more and more like a trade piece, could the pads seek out Bryan Reynolds ?

Mark Polishuk
SD is known to be looking at Reynolds, but I'm not sure how willing the Padres would be to move Grisham. Their ideal would be an outfield with Reynolds AND Grisham, plus Wil Myers and company... if Grisham is moved to facilitate a trade, there's still a left field hole to fill.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Likelihood the Reds leave Cincinnati sometime in the next decade?

Mark Polishuk
The Reds aren't being moved. Too much history and tradition, and the GAB is still quite new.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Thoughts on Seiya for NL ROY?

Mark Polishuk
He's definitely a contender.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
How is it that all of a sudden the Twins, and Pirates among other “small market teams” have all of a sudden “found money to pay either free agents and or their own players"?

Mark Polishuk
The Pirates have signed young players to extensions in the past, and the Twins didn't really spend to any unknown level for them (plus, moving Donaldson created a lot more flexibility).
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The Brewers pitching hasn't been great. They definitely need an offensive shake up? Any predictions on their moves?

Mark Polishuk
Obligatory "it's only been a couple of games" response.

What is interesting about Milwaukee is that they won't wait around to make changes. They got Adames pretty early last season and he ended up being one of their top performers. If there are any deals to be found early, David Stearns will seek them out.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Cards have enough starting pitching as is to get them to a division win? The starting 5 looks decent, but not much depth.

Mark Polishuk
The Cardinals' defense will make any pitching they have look better, and they could also go out and get some veterans in midseason as they did last year.
It's basically a tradition at this point for the Cards to struggle for the first three months before really turning it on midseason and making the playoffs.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Mark, what are the Reds doing?

Mark Polishuk
Aligning payroll to their resources. Not exactly the kind of slogan you want to put on a t-shirt, but...
-----------------------------------------------------------------
While I thought opening day was a cool moment for STL and Pujols, how long will nostalgia carry them if he's hitting .200 in June with Juan Yepez crushing AAA?

Mark Polishuk
I would like to think Pujols knows that his best possible ending is another ring, so if putting a better player into the lineup helps the Cardinals wins, Pujols will (or should?) take a bench role.
