The Tampa Bay Rays are 18-13 at home this season and the St. Louis Cardinals are 16-12 on the road this season. This is a close match-up with both teams having a 45 to 55 percent chance of winning based on 10,000 game simulations generated one play at a time by the AccuScore Simulation Supercomputer. Both starters have a good chance of having a quality start. Shane McClanahan has a 58% chance of a QS and Miles Mikolas a 58% chance. If Shane McClanahan has a quality start the Rays has a 67% chance of winning. His simulated strikeout to walk ratio is 5.5 and he has a 43% chance of having a 5 to 1 K/BB ratio. When he has a 5/1 ratio the Rays win 54%. If Miles Mikolas has a quality start the Cardinals has a 65% chance of winning. His simulated strikeout to walk ratio is 3.5 and he has a 28% chance of having a 5 to 1 K/BB ratio. When he has a 5/1 ratio the Cardinals win 51%. In simulations we tracked the batter for each team that was most productive based his average hits, walks and RBI per simulation. The most productive batter for the Tampa Bay Rays is Ji-Man Choi who averaged 2.28 hits+walks+RBI. He has a 38% chance of having a big game with 3+ Hits, Walks, RBI and if he has a big game the Rays have a 67% chance of winning. The most productive batter for the St. Louis Cardinals is Paul Goldschmidt who averaged 2.48 hits+walks+RBI. He has a 43% chance of having a big game with 3+ Hits, Walks, RBI and if he has a big game the Cardinals have a 62% chance of winning.

McClanahan has shut down stuff. Tough game.

Take a gander at his Fangraphs. Insanely good numbers and a 97 mph average fastball.

12/1 K/BB 😱

Steven Matz (shoulder) has been backed off his throwing progression.

Matz was in the side-session stage and aiming to make a minor league rehab start next week, but the Cardinals are now pumping the brakes a bit. "It’s not moving as quickly as we anticipated," manager Oliver Marmol said Thursday. "He’s not (throwing off a mound), but he’s not set back to the point where he’s shut down. It’s just a slower progression." The lefty has been on the shelf since May 23 due to a shoulder impingement.

Dylan Carlson (hamstring) is likely to rejoin the Cardinals on Friday.

Carlson got off to a slow start on his minor league rehab assignment, but he went 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, four RBI, and three runs scored on Tuesday for Triple-A Memphis before adding two singles and a walk on Wednesday. He'll get the day off on Thursday and then make his way to St. Louis ahead of a weekend series versus the Reds. Carlson has been sidelined since May 22 due to a left hamstring strain.
