We're entering an era where the Contreras brothers could be the two best catchers in 2023 and then everyone else is left.

The position is so bleak. Looking at the leaderboards and Contreras, Smith, and Realmuto are the only names that seem to have staying power at the position. Then you have Trevino and Kirk then a bunch of nothin'.

If Herrera's 135 wRC+ in Memphis at age 22 gets even 90-100 wRC+ with decent defense in MLB, he'd have a chance to be in the top 10 catchers.

from that goold article:
All they’re asking Knizner, 27, to do for that to happen is make an adjustment to his swing in games that count while also carrying a bigger workload than he ever has at the most-demanding position on the field and at the highest level in the game.

Marmol nodded.

“It’s called getting an opportunity,” Marmol said.

Oli is such a refreshing change from "head in the sand and everything is roses and bubbles" Shildt. Not to insult him, because he seemed like a good enough guy, but it was insulting as a fan after watching the team play bad for long stretches and he'd just put on the whole "everything is fine" facade.

Marlins just cut Willians Astudillo. He used to be a goodish hitter. Not sure if he’s a big upgrade over Knizner though.

what's weird is kiz was always a good hitter. we just had to work on his defense. now he can't seem to hit anything?

and Herrera is a good hitter as well. now he hasn't really been given a chance so I'm not going to throw my hands up and wonder what's going on with him yet.

but he does need to be given an extended look so we know what we have going into 2023.

and Molina's offense was horrendous for his first 3-4 years don't forget, so it's nowhere near 19 years. that would insinuate Molina was a good hitter when he came up, but he was terrible for a few years. he obv was other worldly defensively though.

Was looking at Trevino's stats during the All star break and he's already 29 and basically was Knizner at the plate but somehow posting 2.5 fWAR this year.

This is a Alejando Kirk and Will Smith's league now. Yadi and Posey leaving has made this position so bleak.

If it makes us feel any better, Carson Kelly also sucks.

Yes to Willians.

Saw some story by a writer saying there are 3 candidates for the Cardinals to pick up at the trade deadline:
Dan Jansen, Toronto. Not much on the offensive side.
Sean Murphy, Oakland. The best hitter of the 3, 17 HR and 59 RBI last year. Leads A's in RBI this year with 39, .235 hitter.
Max Stassi, Angels. Hitting like .210, not much power or ability with RISP.

I'd say Murphy until Herrera is ready.
