This team just doesn’t have the bullpen depth to have opener games and I think this game (among others) showed that. Again, all this could have been avoided if we just got another starter, but I’ve already gone on that rant enough, so I’ll just leave it at that.
Now we have to play all of the NL East except the Mets while in 2nd place and we suck against everyone except the Marlins.

Just an abysmal loss.

Oviedo, Thompson, and Fernandez are settling in just fine.
The rotation is the issue. It’s a one man rotation right now, with occasional solid waino start.

Fernandez has pitched 5 innings. Not enough sample size to consider him "settling in".dmarx114 wrote: ↑June 26 22, 4:12 pmI don’t think the bullpen is an issue right now.Magneto2.0 wrote: ↑June 26 22, 4:09 pmLost two out of three to the Cubs at home. Thompson has been okayish, still not someone you trust in a big spot. Same with Oviedo. Both are way too homer prone
We have 2 "good" bullpen arms and in a league where starters are barely going 5 innings, that's not going to cut it. We need another shutdown bullpen arm, or at least one we can trust late in games. I agree we need another starter too.

Bullpen depth could be worked out by using arms from the farm and bouncing some of the ineffective ones...but they have to be willing to pull the trigger on that.
Starter depth is of course compounding the issues with the pen.

So we probably shouldn’t have entered the season with exactly five viable starting pitchers, one of whom was known to be injured.

Hicks returning should help the pen.
But we need a starter. And we need someone besides Matz, who is really just a number 4 starter.
Montas is the guy. Let’s see if Mo can pull it off without trading walker.

Walker isn’t an option even if it were for Trout most likely.
They said on the broadcast they said he’s the best hitting prospect they’ve had since Pujols.
