The one run on 8 hits is more worrisome than the 7 runs we gave up. One run on 8 hits is more like the offense of the Matheny years.

The coaches can't hit or pitch for the team, the players have to do that. But at some point in the Maddux-era, you have to wonder why the starters have had a terrible time going past the 5th inning, while walking the world. It seems so much worse on days without Yadi, too.

The "pitch to contact" philosophy we have doesn't work, and it especially doesn't work when most of your staff is also walking a bunch of people every game. It's not sustainable. We need more strike out guys. It's crazy to me that as hard as Cabrera, Fernandez, hell, even Hicks throw, that they have very pedestrian strike out numbers.MinorLeagueGuy wrote: ↑July 6 22, 7:28 amThe coaches can't hit or pitch for the team, the players have to do that. Reyes was the only pitcher we really had/have that walked a bunch but also had unhittable stuff, so he limited the damage a lot of times before his second half implosion last year. These other guys dont have Reyes stuff, so when they walk a batter, it's almost a guarantee they're going to score.

You could argue the other direction that Maddux has gotten way more out of rotations with only 1-2 anchors tops.MinorLeagueGuy wrote: ↑July 6 22, 7:28 amThe coaches can't hit or pitch for the team, the players have to do that.
