If I A/B the lineups of the two franchises this afternoon, maybe. How about comparing 'our' franchise to itself, say, in 2004?

-Create an incredible experience at the ballpark and on the field
-Create a buzz around the city and get people invested
-Create multiple lifelong connections that might create generational bonds
-Maybe even win a championship or two
Harp on sustainability all you want, I guess, but maybe just enjoy the show?
The Padres also have practically no debt and own most of the land and parking around the stadium which they lease for development.

Isn't this precisely what the Cardinals do? What am I missing?MrCrowesGarden wrote: ↑August 6 22, 1:10 pm-Create an incredible experience at the ballpark and on the field

I haven’t once criticized the Cardinals ITT, so I guess you’re missing that.

OK. I must be completely misunderstanding the context of the discussion. Sorry.

You still need an exciting product or people will find something else in a world with ever expanding venues of entertainment. Go back to your last gen Padres and you won't have many new fans. All the people they liked to watch will be mostly gone.

That’s about the only way to kill it and even then it doesn’t always work.

Why can't they keep up forever?Popeye_Card wrote: ↑August 6 22, 10:50 amThey can play with them for a couple years, but they can’t keep up forever.
I don't see anything intrinsically different between these franchises. Both very profitable, both owned by extremely rich people, and so on.

In terms of revenue, this is like saying there is nothing intrinsically different between a watermelon and a cantaloupe. They are both fruits. Both melons. One is just significantly bigger and always will be.Famous Mortimer wrote: ↑August 7 22, 6:41 amWhy can't they keep up forever?Popeye_Card wrote: ↑August 6 22, 10:50 amThey can play with them for a couple years, but they can’t keep up forever.

Don’t confuse revenue and profits. The Padres are very likely not profitable above the luxury tax threshold, where they currently reside, while the Dodgers still are. Many owners are OK with that for a few seasons. I don’t know of any owner who has been OK with losing money forever.

Re: Josh Hader traded to the Padres
Hader blew his first save opportunity for the Padres but they came back and won
He may be toast. From a morale perspective players may be upset but from a "get something for someone clearly on the downside" the Brewers made a very smart choice
Cardinals may want to look into this with Flaherty. If he comes back this year and has a half-way decent 6 weeks, might not be the worst idea to trade him in the offseason.
