Mark Polishuk's NL Central comments

Post by mikechamp »

These comments came from a chat with MLB Trade Rumors' Mark Polishuk that occurred on March 19.

A lot of Cardinals questions asked this week. I included 3 bonus Q&As this time.

The link to the entire chat can be found here: https://live.jotcast.com/chat/mlbtr-liv ... 15339.html

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Assuming all are healthy and they are still in, where should the Brewers look to upgrade?

Mark Polishuk
Bullpen reinforcement, and another bat in the lineup.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Is Wainwright a part of the Hall of Fame class in six years?

Mark Polishuk
Maybe not on the first ballot, but I suspect Wainwright will eventually be in Cooperstown. In six years' time, the voters might have a new collective view on pitching stats, so Wainwright's numbers might stand out more.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
If Arenado misses time, will Walker immediately slot in at 3rd?

Mark Polishuk
For those not watching the WBC game, Arenado just left the game after being hit on the hand. As per Twitter reports, Arenado looked like he was telling teammates on the bench that he was okay, so that's some measure of relief for terrified Cardinals fans.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Who is the Reds next ROY?

Mark Polishuk
Elly De La Cruz in 2024? The scouting reports are downright glowing.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
I know Winn will most likely be in AAA this year despite his strong showing (mostly because of the glut of talent and his age). What needs to happen for him to become the new franchise SS?

Mark Polishuk
The Cardinals have an enviable group of talent on hand, and while injuries and underperformance will inevitably hit at least a couple of their players, it almost feels like STL will have to trade someone to make room. If they think Winn is the guy of the future and is ready, perhaps Gorman is traded to open up second base (for either Winn or Edman/Donovan?
Since the Cards have a lot of rotation holes to fill next winter, a position player-for-pitcher trade seems quite possible.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Any chance Brewers sign any of they’re core players to an extension?

Mark Polishuk
I'm sure the Brewers' explorations into locking players up won't end with Matt Arnold now in charge of the front office.

Looking at the roster, Contreras and Mitchell stand out as extension candidates. By this time next year, they could well be looking at a pre-career extension for Jackson Chourio, if Chourio keeps living up to the hype.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
It doesn't look like Nolan Arenado's injury is too terribly serious, but Dero was ribght to be cautious. It's the right thing for the Cardinals and the right thing for Team USA, which will need him Tuesday night in the title game (assuming this lead holds.)

Mark Polishuk
I find it hard to believe that the Cardinals wouldn't pull Arenado out of the WBC for precautionary reasons, even if there's nothing too wrong with his hand.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Astros and Cardinals work a deal involving Nolan Gorman and Hunter Brown?

Mark Polishuk
Wouldn't this be a fun deal. Not an ideal fit for Houston, however, since Altuve isn't going to miss the entire year, and Gorman then becomes a somewhat overqualified bench piece.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Do you think we'll see more, fewer or the same amount of start players in the next WBC?

Mark Polishuk
If anything, probably more. Some stars probably sat out this year's WBC as a function of wanting to finally have a normal Spring Training for the first time in a few years. Given how almost everyone who plays in the WBC seems to love the experience, I suspect it'll only draw more interest as the event re-establishes itself.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Does the increase in free agent spending this past offseason have something to do with the free agent class next offseason looking comparatively weak?

Mark Polishuk
That's surely one factor, but the larger reason might simply be that (some) teams were more willing and eager to spend now that the CBA had been settled.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Is the Field of Dreams Game this taking place this year?

Mark Polishuk
Nope. A new baseball/softball complex is being built near the site, so the FOD game won't be back until 2024 at the earliest.
